Review

“Absolutely spectacular. This book is must-reading for anyone not yet fully convinced that God’s hand has been on America from the very beginning. The stories in it are genuinely staggering, fascinating, eye-opening, and deeply inspiring. Please do yourself a favor and read this book!”—Eric Metaxas, New York Times bestselling author of Bonhoeffer and If You Can Keep It “Whether it was God or the gods, some crucial moments in American history have turned on providential events that defy rational explanation.  Medved has a keen eye for such semi-supernatural stories, and tells them with his customary clarity.”—Joseph J. Ellis, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner; Author of Founding Brothers “Michael Medved does a beautiful job of piecing together the most providential parts of our history—from the story of “indestructible” George Washington to “the miracle of Lincoln.” And I can’t help but agree with his argument: To believe America is exceptional is simply to be grateful for what God has given us.” —Paul Ryan, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives  “Michael Medved's wonderful new book makes a compelling case for two beliefs that many of us hold dear—that God's hand is in history, and that America is a divinely favored country. Given the dark mood of the moment, The American Miracle could not be more timely.”—Joseph I. Lieberman, former U.S. Senator from Connecticut; Democratic nominee for Vice President “Without denying the difficulties our nation faces, Medved reminds us that we have faced problems in the past and endured because of our national ideals, and that the same principles that have driven American exceptionalism in the past can help light the way out of our present darkness. Read this book to renew your hope in America.”—Dr. Arthur C. Brooks, president of American Enterprise Institute; author of The Conservative Heart "This is a brisk, joyous romp through some of the most critical providential moments that made America an exceptional nation, told by a Yale-trained historian… who writes with brio and conviction.” —Karl Rove, Senior Advisor to President George W. Bush “If you love reading American history, or any history written like a page-turning novel… or just love great writing—the artistry of words that often read more like poetry than prose —you will love this book.  The fact that Michael Medved gives the reader all of these makes this a must read.”—Lanny J. Davis, former Special Counsel to President Clinton; author of Truth to Tell  “Michael Medved has written an engaging, affectionate and historically compelling book about America…The American Miracle is a source of knowledge, a source of comfort, a source of inspiration. After reading it you’ll know America better, and treasure her more.”—Peter Wehner, White House aide to Presidents George Bush and George W. Bush; Senior Fellow, Ethics and Public Policy Center “Michael Medved has written a timely study of the centrality of faith and providence in the American story, challenging Americans to reaffirm the religious ideals on which their nation was founded. Read it and be inspired.”—Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, former Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth; author of Not in God's Name "Michael Medved chronicles in intriguing detail how America's unlikely founding and enduring success can't be explained by luck or coincidence, but only one thing: divine providence. After reading this book, even the toughest skeptics will be hard pressed not to believe that God had a role in America’s fortune." —Bill Bennett, Secretary of Education under President Reagan; author of America: The Last Best Hope "Medved speaks truth boldly and reasons carefully... and he is also a most gifted writer. In The American Miracle he reminds us that there once was a day when Americans knew the history of our country as a story of promise and providence, and he is confident that Americans can learn that story again."—R. Albert Mohler, Jr., President, the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary“Even readers well versed in American history will enjoy his account of the random coincidences and quirks of fate that lead to the founding of the Republic of Texas and the annexation of California…[a] fascinating and provocative book.” —Commentary

It’s popular today to agonize over America’s exceptional history and express shame over our national faults. Author Medved states this “confuses the reality of American exceptionalism with fantasies about American perfectionism. To argue that a higher power directed the United States to a unique and valuable role in the world isn’t the same as insisting that our national saga unfolded without flaw, folly, or failure.” As the author explains, the founders and builders of our nation believed deeply in heavenly favor for their efforts and he provides excellent insight to critical moments in our history and how people’s strengths and weaknesses impacted the results. This is an excellent book for those who believe in a loving God who guides imperfect people to accomplish his will despite their limitations and failures. I’m not normally interested in history, but this book was so compelling I could hardly put it down.

This is the first one that I have read by him. It’s meticulously researched and although there were a few parts that were a bit on the dry side for me, all in all I enjoyed it immensely. It’s an absolutely fascinating and deep theory about how so many events in American history have been the result of the hand of God and were not accidents. He describes specific incidents where God has worked miracles starting with the Pilgrims and ending with Abraham Lincoln. And no, the book does not claim that America is perfect, but after reading this, I realized that it’s a country that’s incredibly blessed with an exceptional history. There were two parts that I most loved about this book. One was his amazing description of how he met his wife. The other is his reminder that although God has intervened in American history, Americans should have act nobly and have an attitude of gratitude and humility. In other words, they should not forget how blessed they are, what a truly exceptional and unique country they have, and finally, they should remember to honor Him. I wish that this book would be required reading in high schools or colleges. It would be such an inspiring and refreshing change when compared to all the negativity these days.

An outstanding book, replete with history that was not taught 50 years ago when I was in school. It is difficult to read it and not see that the rise of the Republic had an element of design which relied on powers far beyond human control to implement.I was especially taken with the story of Nicholas Trist who illegally negotiated the treaty with Mexico, signed little more than a week after gold was discovered there.

The American Miracle: Divine Providence in the Rise of the Republic is a great read. Well-told and well-researched. I learned much more than I expected in an area I was already somewhat familiar. It will give anyone a much greater appreciation of how rare and precious the heritage of this great nation is. And it will bolster anyone's faith in an age where faith is struggling. It is more of a stretch of faith to believe it was anything but a miracle.

Yes, it is a history book and I for one haven't read many history books and never studied history in undergraduate or graduate studies. The author was a history major, which he displays in his syndicated radio program every day. But I knew that I agreed with this book's premise that America is indeed blessed. Isn't it so much easier to like a book when you agree ever more and more with the examples presented throughout the book to illustrate what you already believe. So I remember concluding in high school that the best decision I'd ever made, or would ever make was the decision I made to be born in the USA! (How I accomplished this I'm not quite sure.) How could I not love this book, especially the chapters on Lincoln. I leaned that Lincoln was so depressed (prior to taking office) that he would not carry a knife on his person, fearing that he might deliberately harm himself. This was no secret at the time - can you imagine how far he would have gotten in the present day with 24/7 scrutiny from cable news and Internet? As our 16th president he was perhaps the only person on earth that could have led our country through the Civil War in one piece.Read this book and hopefully you'll realize just how lucky you are to be an American.

It was fortuitous that I happened to be turn the dial to Medved's radio program when he told the story of young George Washington's invisible moments in battle. This motivated me to order the Kindle version of this book. Michael makes American history exciting to read. Students high school age on up should be required to read this book so they might take pride "in this, the greatest country on God's green earth."

This work goes far beyond Michael's typically brilliant historical writing; it reaches the depths of your soul, lights your heart on fire, and raises it shining for all the world to see.The book exposes and explains the truth of "American Exceptionalism" such that you're convinced of both the greatness of our nation and of our obligation to live up to her ideal. It exposes the gas lighting garbage we're fed every day as just so much sludge erupting from poisoned minds, that we can and will sweep away into the compost pile of history. We are a great nation and we are a great people - the book offers proof after proof of this.It touched me personally, living through a particularly difficult time, as an inspiration, a timely gift. I can't thank the author enough for persevering through his cancer and book.
