this book reminds America what it already knew but did not wish to see! You hear in print anew the news broadcasters misrepresent the Tet offensive. you see the avenue used to distort education to achieve a pre determined output rather acknowledging our history and then determine what we want to do again and what we do not! this book allows you to remember the misinformed street demonstators and wonder why this misinformation system is still in force. You once more hear senators Albright and ted Kennedy, the brother of the president who allowed us to get there in the first place re-arrange history so that Americans will hate 50,000 young people who gave their lives while doing their job! you can smell the 3,000,000 decaying bodies in Cambodia and South Vietnam that the News organizations covered up so well! there is a great bell ringing for the demise of our democracy! can you hear it!I recommend this book as required reading in all high schools and colleges.

While I realize this book is very old, I purchased a new versus a used copy as it is a gift and wanted it to be in good condition. I am disappointed with the quality of the book. The front cover under the dust jacket has a large mark (fading?) and a scratch. The fore edge paging also has spotting. This is not the condition I would have expected from a new book.

Like the man himself, this tome is a conundrum: it opens with a long list of myths about the Vietnam war, all promulgated by the Left, which Nixon demyths in the next section. The man who said in 1969 that the first order of business is to end this war! And he did, according to his plan. There are more Americans today who look back and say, no, it was not worth the sacrifice, the effort. Even the secretary of Denfense at the time wrote, not too long ago, that, yes, it *was* a civil war *and* the "domino effect" was overblown.Nixon adamantly defends his controversial moves, like moving into Cambodia. He says the Vietcong's supplies cam from there...and guess what? He says that the 1975 Cambodian genocide, had nothing to do with his[necessary] policy.I've come to admire alot about RN since that time but this book does not convince me that the protests at home lengthenede the War or that the Congress voting on no oversight of the region after 1975, resulted in a "fail".He lends some Philosophy to the mix, saying, in effect, that the cliche, you can win the battle but lose the war, is less significant that you can win the Peace but lose the war.My take is that he was not thrilled with reagan as a President, saying that whole "star wars" thing, successful as it was, not *not* methodical; but here he credits Reagan, with [somehow] finally stopping that *real* domino effect in country after country right up until 1979!This is a very accessible read, not only for poolside but for 2:00 am deeper analysis.Don't let the awful colour jacket portrait throw you off: remember this is the guy who walked in the sand, steeped in thought.......in a suit and tie!!!(softcover edition)

President Nixon's political problems notwithstanding, his was a serious intellect which was capable of getting to the heart of a subject. Starting with an enumeration of 22 conceptions about the war in Viet Nam, all of which,in print, seemed, not only plausible but were accepted by all too many people as true. As you read them you find yourself saying "no that's not right...sounds familiar but it's not right." Your vindication is at hand when the trap is sprung and the author declares all of the above is false. The book is a review of how events in the war played out politically and strategically, and how it was reported to the American people. Instead of being a self-serving recount of why I did the things I did, it is a well developed cronicle of events which elicits for those who lived through the period, tried to understand the period and most poignantly participated in the period, a feeling that... hey that's the way I remember it happening. It is a debunking of the self-serving myths propagated by the media. Contrary to the popular opinion forced upon us by the media, we had the war won in 1973, and with peace at hand Congress withdrew virtually all support, most importantly the threat of resumed air support for the Vietnamese ground troups should North Viet Nam not honor the peace treaty they signed. Regardless of your feelings about US participation in the Viet Nam War, Mr. Nixon's elucidation of the events will give many food for thought and revisit the question of where the responsibility for the tragedy belongs. Coincidentally, very shortly before writing this I watched an interview of General Schwartzkoff wherein he propounded the same view of our "loss" in Viet Nam as I remembered and as is described in NO MORE VIETNAMS. This should be on the mandatory reading list at our colleges.

5 stars for many factual details2 for the self-serving spin

Whether you agree or disagree as to what kind of president Richard Nixon was, you will be impressed with his writing ability. He goes into great detail on the events that led up to our involvement in Vietnam, long before it was a household word during the sixies and early seventies.

I first read this book in 1986, and didn't believe most of what president Nixon espoused about the Vietnam War. I was raised a Democrat and reflexively reviled Mr. Nixon. In my youth, I'd been indoctrinated by the likes of; Halberstam, Sheehan, et al. After decades of personal research, I came to understand how badly I'd been lied to by writers carrying forward their own political agendas. No More Vietnams is factually correct, and an engaging read. I recommend to anyone interested in honestly understanding the Vietnamese conflict to read; NO MORE VIETNAMS twice, then proceed with Col. Summers' ON STRATEGY, Moyars' TRIUMPH FORSAKEN, Sorley's A BETTER WAR, and Vieth's BLACK APRIL.

One of the best book I ever read. Any one who want to understand the Vietnam War should read this great book.

About the Author

David Hatcher Childress, known as the real-life Indiana Jones to the many fans of his books, is a captivating speaker and the author or coauthor of over 25 books. He has traveled the world several times over, seeking adventure and the answers to the mysteries of mankind’s past. Born in France in 1957 and raised in the mountains of Colorado and Montana, David’s curiosity about the world was piqued at a young age. He attended the University of Montana where his studies in oriental culture and philosophy led him to a job teaching English in Taiwan. In 1976, David left the United States on what would become a six-year research and adventure odyssey. During this time, he studied first-hand the ancient civilizations of Africa, the Middle East and China, sometimes journeying into dangerous territory along the way (like Uganda during the overthrow of Idi Amin). After more than 40 years of investigating these arcane subjects, David finds his unique views and ideas gaining popularity. He is currently a co-star on the History Channel show Ancient Aliens. This popular show is now in its eleventh season and David journeys to Peru, Bolivia and Mexico for episodes of the show. He has appeared on Fox-TV’s Sightings and Encounters, two NBC-TV specials, The Conspiracy Zone, and segments for the Discovery Channel, A&E, the Sci-Fi Channel, the Disney Channel, The Travel Channel and others. David also appeared on the Canadian television show Weird or What?, hosted by William Shatner, in its 2011-2012 season. He is also a frequent guest on nationally syndicated radio shows. He continues to explore, write and excite people about discovery through his magazine, World Explorer, and his publishing company, Adventures Unlimited Press. When not traveling, he divides his time between his homes in Illinois and Arizona. He has bookstores open to the public in both locations.

Mr. Childress wastes too many pages (about half the book) describing his living quarters, meals, and transportation. Only about half of the pages describe lost cities and ancient mysteries. I bought this book to learn about lost cities and ancient mysteries — as the title implies; I did not buy it to learn about his travel experience.

While first published in 1986, Childress' book is still a decent compendium of the lost civilizations and legends of South America. As with all in this series, the author uses his travels as a reason to recount and excerpt the tales and legends of others who went before him. He visits some of these locations, but mostly those accessible to all tourists. He's not actually an archaeologist or an Indian Jones type, but like all these books, he allows readers to travel to distant lands as he distills what he has discovered in his studies. He doesn't latch on to strange theories here as much as in some of his other books. Much of interest is revealed such as tunnel systems, potential locations of King Solomon's mines and the disappearance of Colonel Percy Harrison Fawcett. You can read more about Fawcett in the excellent The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon. See also Mysteries of Ancient South America.

What I most enjoy about Childress' books is his cheerful narrative that makes the reader feel as though s/he is along for the ride. Though full of details, Childress' story-telling never gets bogged down. A very fast-paced, enjoyable travelog.

Going to a couple locations this winter that are described in this book and love reading Childress' view on what he saw many years ago. Now let's see if the area has changed much.

wish he wrote more

This book is about the personal experiences of the author in travelling through South America. The author writes in an interesting and informative style and provides valuable information about the sites he visited. Having travelled to some of the sites he describes, I can say that his information is very accurate. He at least did some investigation into the sites he described. Because of his descxription of some of the sites I have not visited, he has encouraged me to make another trip to South America. I was, however, put off by the descriptions of his casual personal sexual trysts in various cities that could have been left out, as well as his descriptions of his other personal activites.

Fun book to read. Interesting ideas to learn about.

I love this book. Thanks.
