I like that the author sticks true to Gracie's cultural background, and incorporates it into the story line to help build Gracie's character. I also enjoyed Alfie's character because it touches upon the effects of divorce on sibling relationships. I do however, wish the characters were a little more rebellious. For example, Kylie, I believe her character had a lot of depth. With that being sad, I found some parts a little drier than the others, and i found some parts slightly repetitive. Noah's "play boy" rep, the inevitable break-up, and the punching/smacking are probably the ones that stick out more. I also thought the mother's dilemma was slightly rushed. Perhaps in future books there will be a reason for it, but I wish there would have been a little more leading towards it and not just she figured it out during a surprise trip. Now, let's talk about X. This is my favorite part of the book, it's what kept me reading during the drier sections. X brings excitement to the book and the plot twist is intriguing. Honestly, I wish there was more plot and dialogue revolving around X. I think Yang was an interesting choice, but I'd like to understand why him? Maybe I missed that section? There are a few sections "Meanwhile" that offer insight into X's head which increases the curiosity. In all, it's a good read, light and easy. I almost quit reading it at one point, but I'm glad i didn't. It even made me laugh a little.

Twin sister moves back to CA from Korea in order to attend the final year of high school with her brother. Couple plot twists explain why she moved away, as well as follows the stalker that she has.

Gracie's mother has remarried and sent Gracie back to America to live with her father, twin brother Alfie and Stepmother Claire. Gracie is finding it difficult to adjust from the Korean culture she has become so accustomed to even with little things like bowing and saying Korean words. She is trying though and has made some new friends with her brother's friends - Jace, West, and Noah. Noah Pennington is the town's heartbreaker, and though Alfie has warned her sister away from him, it seems that Gracie has captured Noah's attention. It's all good though as Gracie has a head on her and won't break and bow down to Noah's commands. If he wants her, then he has to earn her love and woo her and prove to her she isn't another notch on his bedpost. If adjusting to American life wasn't hard enough, Gracie has attracted the attention of a stalker named X who wants her to go back to where she came from and more importantly stay away from Noah otherwise he will get hurt. A Girl Like Gracie ended up on a cliffhanger, of course, Noah being hurt in an accident. Has X achieved their goal and gotten Gracie to back off from Noah? Needing a new YA author to discover and love mysteries, the check out Scarlett Haven's Bayside Academy series. The other thing that I love about Scarlett Haven's books is that they are all quick YA reads.

It seems like the author is just taking what she knows about Korean (and Japanese and Chinese) culture and bullshitting her way through the book. If you’re fluent in Japanese, you definitely can read a bunch of tradition Chinese characters. In fact. The main character even specifically mentions Kanji, which is literally Chinese characters used in Japanese (as opposed to hiragana or katakana).Overall I found this to be fairly insulting to Asian culture, especially when main character keeps spiting how much she loved Korean culture and how proud she is of it.Lastly, Koreans aren’t the only ones to add a year to your age - Chinese culture does too (time in womb is counted so when you’re born you’re one).

Gracie was a pretty good book. I read this book originally when it was titled A Girl Like Gracie and it was a much shorter book. Gracie James has been living in Seoul, South Korea with her mother living in a small apartment. Her mother has sent her to live with her ex-husband, his new wife, and her twin brother Alfie. Both Alfie and Gracie are half Korean and half American but they look completely different. Gracie looks Korean like her mother and her twin brother has blond hair and blue eyes. They live in California and they live in a huge mansion since their father has lots of money. They go to Bayside Academy which is a private school where most of the students have money. One of the many students she meets is Noah Pennington. He's known for being a player but he does everything he can to be with Gracie. She keeps getting these horrible notes that are signed X and terrible things happen. She has a horrible stalker that has it against her.

This is a very suspenseful story. A girl just trying to make it in America since she has been living in Korea with her mom for years. I really identified with Gracie and her hardship. I can't wait to see what happens with X and how Gracie handles the new situation she finds herself in.

I read this book when it was split up into different novellas. I thought it was very well written. I truly enjoyed the suspense that was built upon from the time Gracie moves back to the States. I also enjoyed reading the relationship develop between Gracie and Alfie.

Story of reunited twins, with twists and turns. Kind of choppy writing which may be a way to illustrate the predominately Korean thinking of the heroine but is annoying. Most of the charactors aren't believable.

White Work: Techniques and 188 Designs (Dover Embroidery, Needlepoint), by Carter Houck

From the Back Cover

In dozens of countries and in hundreds of varieties, the venerable craft of white work has become a byword for the ultimate form of needlework elegance. Its 3,000-year history encompasses every conceivable form of garment and decorative linen, from peasant blouses to papal vestments and the bridal gowns of queens; it appears in many guises as the favored embroidery of needleworkers from Denmark to South Africa, from England to the Philippines.Unfortunately, white work has frequently been neglected in the United States because of its underserved reputation as a difficult form of embroidery — the type of work that, as author Carter Houck states, is never seen "beyond the glass cases of a museum." In reality white work can be performed at all levels of expertise; even more important, Ms. Houck shows that superb results can be achieved without laborious practice and prodigious technique. From these pages white work emerges as a vibrant and continually evolving form of contemporary embroidery that is both beautiful in itself and valuable for its myriad uses.Ms. Houck assumes no previous knowledge of white work and provides complete information on materials, pattern-transferring techniques, and instructions and diagrams for over 20 stitches: the simple chain stitch and running stitch; satin stitches and French knots; and more difficult "virtuoso" techniques like the Star and Shadow.Following the instructions are 40 pages of magnificent patterns, including florals, repeats, abstract designs, spot and corner decorations in a wide variety of sizes and moods, and two complete sets of alphabets for use as monograms. For each design Ms. Houck has suggested a stitch or stitches that produce optimal effects. As a result, the book acts as a self-contained guide to white work that can transform blouses, cuffs, collars, scarves, place settings, curtains, or any embroidery medium into treasures of heirloom quality.

This book has surprisingly large number of patterns. I bought a Kindle edition. It allows the ability to enlarge on the screen. From here you can take an iPad picture then print it on your printer. From there you are able to transfer pattern to a grid using paint or your favorite paint program. Now you can easily complete your project using the weave of your fabric to match the grid. Nice!

This book, a great disappointment, is part of the Dover "reproduction" series (ca. 1978). It would be of interest to the needleworker who is interested in late Victorian designs, as they come from a collection published ca. 1900 ("The Chief Pattern Book of Embroidery Patterns for the Improvement of Artistic Embroidery on Linens and the Promotion of Good Handicrafts," Nuremberg, Germany: Johann Merkenthaler). As such, there is little instructional material for those who wish to learn these techniques (principally cutwork with satin stitch and "bridges" & line work with stem/backstitch). There are diagrams, perhaps from the first edition, but they have no numbers to indicate where component stitches begin and end, although with the basic nature of them, the needleworker with a little experience will be able to figure them out.Stitches include stem stitch, backstitch, straight stitch (i.e., satin stitch), lazy daisy, running, long & short (long & short satin), seed (short satin), padded satin (guess what?), buttonhole/overcast, feather, star (Smyrna cross with arms of different lengths), herringbone, couching, and a few others.Instruction pages include a brief history, how to transfer the patterns (air- and water-disappearing markers; tailor's chalk; embossing; BUT pouncing - the historical technique - is not mentioned!), and thread/fabric/hoops. Not a lot, folks, and certainly no step-by-step or how to incorporate the designs into modern work (such as table or bed linen). The "188 designs" are there but no "techniques".If you are looking for instruction in whitework/cutwork techniques, this book is useless. In place of this book, I recommend Thérèse deDillmont's "Encyclopedia of Needlework" (ca. 1884). It is now titled "The Complete DMC Encyclopedia of Needlework," Running Press, various years, incl. 1978). This historic book has many how-to and in-progress diagrams of the techniques, plus alphabets and other design elements. If you purchase Houck's book, consider it an adjunct to the deDillmont and containing patterns without instruction. (The deDillmont covers a multiplicity of different techniques, not just whitework.) mb

I love this book for the designs! If you are looking for White Work eye candy you will be disappointed it has no photographs of white work other than the front cover. This is a simple book and if you look at the price it reflects that as well. Still it is a wonderful book just for the designs alone, which can be used with any embroidery not just in white work. I enjoyed reading about the history and how stitches are used for white work. The only thing that really makes white work any different is that it is done in all white thread on white fabric and when you work in 1 color you need to use different stitches to create texture and make your embroidery interesting. The author suggests stitches for use with the patterns but they are only recommendations. I do wish there was a few examples to "see" what has been explained but that is not needed in order to use the patterns or to try creating your own white work.Overall for the price this book is worth it for the patterns and a little bit of white work history and ideas.

So many designs allowing you to create your own arrangements and motifs. Very helpful in planning new projects. This is not a book of instructions although there are the obligatory pictures of various embroidery stitches to help the novice.I bought this because I want to do a large candlewicking project and wasn't having any luck with designing it and I'm very well pleased with this book.

These patterns are much clearer and nicer than I expected. I have paid a good bit more, for a good bit less. They also do not have to be done in all white, although white on white and white on pastels is lovely, I did some of the corner patterns in colors, and they were nice too.

New to White Work? Try this book and it will help you overcome any fears, concerns regarding how to approach white work techniques. I am happy to have purchased this book and added it to my sewing library. I think you will feel the same, if you purchase a copy for yourself. The transaction was smooth, the shipping was quick and I am delighted with my purchase.

The only difficulty this book would present would be transferring the patterns given by Carter Houck from one page of paper to tracing paper. I would have loved to see perforations along the spine of the book to ease the tearing out of the patterns I would trace. And I would have appreciated mention of such transferring materials as the widely available transfer pencils. Apart from those considerations, the patterns were lovely, and I can hardly wait to get to work on them.

The book has some interesting ideas and instructions. I'm sure I'll use it in the future. I was hoping for a little more in the way of illustrations, but will keep the book.

I believe this book is printed from a blog or something similar. 83 pages with very huge line space. For every topic, it might have 1 page to talk about it, quite superficial. At last, there's a chapter about frequently asked questions in System design but don't expect any hints or detailed explanation or what should be paid attention. I don't think this book should be called a 'book'.

If you want to get much information about System Design Interview, then this book is for you. I am also interested in this topic and my colleague recommended me this guide. In this book you can find information about the system development life cycle, the functional side of System Design, steps to approach your System Design Interview and much more. I want to say, that it is a great resource to know everything about system design and how to prepare for your interview. This book is well organized and easy to read. All information is laid out logically and is easy to understand. The author's recommendations and instructions are very detailed, effective, informative and helpful. I liked this book and recommend it for those in need of this type of information. It is worth reading.

My goodness!! For 10 bucks, I received a book with very large print and double spaced...flipped through a few pages and decided to just return it...a total waste of money.

I bought a hard-copy of this book (indeed an article). It gives you an outline of designing a system, while not digging into any of the elements. Maybe it's just not what I want. At least it's not worth of 13 dollars.

Somewhat high-level and superficial book. Highly inadequate for a serious system design interview

Very preliminary, not much new stuff. Would not recommend this book. Seems like the content is not fully developed yet

System design was never been easy and i think it will never be it needs a lot of patience and strategic knowledge to reach a suitable comfort stage. With all the strategies and explanation about development life cycle, the functional side of System Design, steps to approach your System Design Interview could help anyone to be prepare for the time being. I would suggest this book to beginners.

Good resource to refer to brush up the basics but not enough for the interviews alone. Could be better if had more examples.
