#305,389 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This book is shocking. It's put together with laser-like precision and an attention to detail. I couldn't put it down and I look forward to the next installment.

Followed this case when it happened and after. There is so much to be shared about this unresolved murder and the motives behind the killing of Zahau. However, this book and its author do the case a complete disservice. I signed up for Kindle just to read this book, and I am extremely disappointed. The author provides long-winded, irrelevant theories that are only designed to pad the book, as there is very little core substance. The padding is so excessive that you have to read Book 2 to get to the rest of the "meat". Garbage. Shame on you. I have started reading "Two Face" about the Shan'ann Watts murder, and that book is equally weak in its attempt to fill up pages to keep the story (and revenue stream) alive through sequels. The theories proposed by this author are weak, and mildly misogynistic. In Shan'ann's case, disrespectful to her memory; and inaccurate in the assessment of who she was (in my opinion).

So many wrong ‘facts” in this book, starting with Jonah Shacknai is a billionaire. He is a multi-millionaire. Rebecca Zahau’s death is ruled a suicide and the Civil case is being appealed. Just like Mary Zahau’s lawyer invented the story of how Rebecca was murdered, van der Leek makes up “facts” and presents them as true. With his imagination, this title should be recatorgorized as fiction. Rebecca Zahau was a troubled person and had once faked her own kidnapping when she was living with another millionaire and lying to him that she was divorced. She was very much married at the time and was trying to keep both men hooked. She stole $1000 worth of jewelry when she was 30, just a year and a half before her suicide. Learn the real facts of the case, this book certainly does not contain them.

It takes huge nerve to write about this case. 7 years in and yes there are answers but no one till him ( myself included) has had the nerve to even attempt to put it in print, I saw one person said Jonah wasn't a billionaire...oh yes he is! And uhm...jest a leetle bit litigious too. You know many years ago when all of us were on the case, the files were also given to Ann Rule, the TC writer, but even that wonderful woman stopped at the door. Everybody's interested, but no one has the nerve to write it. Kudos to him, people want to know about this MURDER, never, ever, ever suicide case and he,s bringing it.

In his latest book Nick Van Der Leek demonstrates effectively how Rebecca and Max's deaths are connected, a question that has yet to be answered previously. Rebecca died BEFORE Max did. If you want to know the dynamic that Rebecca and Max found themselves in for this to be, then read this book. I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel to this bizarre case.

Another wonderful book. So much information I had no idea about. Thought I had heard everything, but this is just full of interesting information.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, March 2013: Peppered with fascinating facts and well-chosen anecdotes, Amy Stewart’s brisk tour of the origin of spirits acquaints the curious cocktail fan with every conceivable ingredient. Starting with the classics (from agave to wheat), she touches on obscure sources--including a tree that dates to the dinosaur age--before delving into the herbs, spices, flowers, trees, fruits, and nuts that give the world’s greatest drinks distinctive flavors. Along the way, you’ll enjoy sidebars on bugs in booze and inspired drink recipes with backstories that make lively cocktail party conversation. Like Wicked Plants, this delightfully informative, handsome volume isn’t intended as a complete reference or DIY guide, but it will demystify and heighten your appreciation of every intoxicating plant you imbibe. --Mari Malcolm

Review

"Amy Stewart has a way of making gardening seem exciting, even a little dangerous." —The New York Times "Many boozy books have been published over the years, spilling over with fun facts about absinthe, grog and bathtub gin. What makes Stewart's book different is her infectious enthusiasm for the plants, their uses, their history, and the botanists who roamed the earth finding them. The result is intoxicating but in a fresh, happy, healthy way." —USA Today"The Drunken Botanist is a sipping book, not a quaffing book, best enjoyed in moderation...Part Ripley’s Believe It or Not, part compendium on the order of 'Schott’s Original Miscellany' and part botanical garden tour, albeit with a curated cocktail party at the end . . . a companionable reference and whimsical recitation of historical-botanical trivia, with a little tart debunking." —The Washington Post "Sipping an evening cocktail while flipping through this fine volume, I discovered that Ms. Stewart knew how to change a run-of-the-mill cocktail into an intriguing one." —The Wall Street Journal "A book that makes familiar drinks seem new again…Through this horticultural lens, a mixed drink becomes a cornucopia of plants." —NPR's Morning Edition "Fascinating, well researched and instructive — with appealing recipes too." —Rosie Schaap, New York Times "Gardening can be an intoxicating hobby, especially if the botany is booze-related." —The Associated Press

#3,432 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I loved this book. While the format is something like an encyclopedia, I read it cover-to-cover, and was sad when I reached the end; the entries were so informative and well-written that it was more engaging than some novels I've read recently.I knew some of the background info, but a lot was new to me. As a species, we are clearly keen on fermenting anything that might be fermentable! The suggestions of ways to explore more- like with tequilas and liqueurs- were really interesting, and our bar storage is going to be increasing. The drink recipes included worked really well based on those I tried. I also appreciated the information about what makes a premium spirit worth extra money vs. the basics. While I originally got an ARC of it through LibraryThing, once I'd read it I ordered the published version- yes, I liked it that much. The cover is splendid, and the 2-color printing in the interior works beautifully. It's also great to have an index. If you are interested in the history of booze, or in cocktails, or spirits in general- I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is not only really informative, it's a great read, and a fine reference.

Intriguing read. I dabble a bit in making bitters, limoncello, and various types of meads and honey wines, and this book provided a fascinating tour of the history of alcohol, while introducing other intriguing social facts, like how slave trade grew to harvest sugar for rum; there's also some wonderful recipes, a fantastic discussion on what defines a top shelf alcohol, and even a history of a number of plants discussed. If you geek out on science or history, or just like booze, you'll probably find something to love in this book.

As an author, I wish I had written this book. I can not imagine a more enjoyable topic to research! The book ties together two of my favorite things-- botany and alcohol. Packed with interesting facts about things I've been putting in my stomach for years that I never knew before. Joking aside, it also provides a foundation to think more about why we like certain tastes, why drinks taste as they do, and the many ways that plant diversity enriches our lives.

I'm NOT a heavy drinker by any stretch of the imagination considering I consume less than a dozen adult beverages a year, in fact I use far more liquor in my alcohol based cleaners and home DIY products but this is such a fun book! If you have any interest in the history and origins of vodka, gin, rum, whiskey and more, this is the absolute best book I've encountered. Tonic has quinine which is a well known muscle relaxer. Gin is made from juniper berries which is long known for their pain relieving properties, so it's safe to presume that once upon a time our ancestors knew that a gin and tonic was great as a pain-relieving muscle-relaxer.

This book is great, I've learned so much about alcohol and the plants used to make truly great drinks. Any hipster would appreciate learning about this hard to find drinks. Problem is I can't get further than a chapter in before I'm reaching for a drink.Beware: you will find a new appreciation for good gin after reading this.

Lots and lots of minutiae to keep my grinning head spinning, and without the assistance of alcohol!A few very minor points though:Pg 73 "True yams are almost never sold in the U.S." No longer the case. Most ethnic groceries carry varieties of Dioscorea.Pg 89 "Some millets are called broom-corn; the broom shape is an apt descriptor." Think broom-corn is so called because it's used to make brooms, not because of its shape.Pg 120 Jackfruit. "When ripe, the fruit emits a foul odor from the rind.." Ripe jackfruit does not stink, but durian, which looks like a small jackfruit, certainly does.I was a bit disappointed there is no mention of poncirus trifoliata which is hardy enough to be grown in most gardens in the US and bears a very aromatic fruit, which I'm told by a Korean, makes a good alcoholic infusion. And then there is Asimina triloba, Pawpaw, our largest native fruit, which makes a great liquor, available from at least half a dozen distilleries in the United States.

When I first got this book I opened it up and looked at a page, my first thought was, boy does this look boring. Also, very confusing. Many of the pages are black printed on white, but the font is small. Some of the pages or parts of them are black printed on light green, others are black printed on dark green. I've never seen a book where I almost felt physically dizzy trying to read it. There are some very interesting facts in here, but I honestly don't have the energy to to try and get through this book.

I like what I have found between the covers so far, as I have read about 40% or 50% of the book. An unusual book: the author writes with the authority of a life long academic but in an informal, somewhat irreverent style that belies the apparently totally authentic content. Even if you never mix another drink,or use the book to avoid drinking harmful concoctions, just the reading of Stewart's text is worth the price of admission. The historical content alone, is worth the price of purchase!

a fun, easy to read and informative book. fits right in with the series that began with Wicked Bugs, which i think was the first book, well written, although all books fall short because proofreaders aren't used anymore, but, the author or editor did a very good job and there were few grammar mistakes. the anecdotes and the information is presented in a manner that will make amaze and delight any reader who wants to touch on the subject of plants used by humans, and some animals, to intoxicate. proper and/or long forgotten recipes for great cocktails included! i do not imbibe much, but, some of the recipes included in the book are intriguing and enticing. someday i'll try one or two.

Review

"A reporting tour de force and reminiscent of Cadillac Desert, the 1986 book by Marc Reisner that is required reading for anyone seeking to understand water policy in the West. McGraw’s work is similarly nuanced, thoroughly researched and beautifully written. .  . McGraw showcases a deep understanding of Texas law, history and culture. There’s a desire not just to explain where we stand now, but how we got here." (Texas Observer 2018-05-02)"Water is set to become the world’s most important commodity. It will be access to water that will determine which communities thrive. It will be the ability of state and local governments to set and enforce water conservation policies that will determine the long-term viability of the quickly growing cities and suburbs being planted in the desert. . . we need to worry about the right things. . . Start worrying about water." (Inside Higher Ed 2018-05-10)"McGraw's book proves that the United States simply isn't ready for the next big drought or flood. This is a problem that's been brewing for a long time, and climate change is about to make it worse. Gulp." (EcoWatch 2018-05-02)"Although A Thirsty Land is Texas-based, it raises questions about water as a resource and commodity that fits any location; questions we should all be considering regardless of where we live and the prodigiousness of our local water resources." (Block Island Times 2018-06-01)"In stark prose that often gleams like a bone pile bleached in the sun, McGraw travels back and forth across Texas to give a free-ranging but deadeye view of the crisis on the horizon." (Texas Monthly 2018-07-01)"It’s hard to write about the slow creep of environmental crises like drought without resorting to shock tactics or getting lost in the weeds…[McGraw] draws out the conflicts in compelling ways by drilling into the plight of individual water users. Even if you feel no connection to Texas, these stories are relevant to every part of the country." (Outside 2018-07-17)"Interviewing both scientific experts and everyday water users, [McGraw] clearly delineates the competing interests, describes political and geological reality, and makes a compelling argument for statewide water policy that utilizes modern technology and fairly weighs parochial needs against the good of the whole." (Arizona Daily Star, Southwest Books of the Year 2019-01-05)"Readers will put the book down with a sense of urgency, a set of strategies, and a feeling of hope." (Texas Books in Review 2019-02-08)

"A timely, important book that manages to be a romp, too. You’ll meet dreamers, schemers, and even a few genuine heroes who have been fretting and feuding over the water woes of the Lone Star State for centuries. By the time you finish A Thirsty Land, you’ll understand that water truly is destiny—and not just in Texas. Seamus McGraw raises urgent questions that we will all have to face to avoid a parched future." (Dan Fagin, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Toms River)"In Texas, water is the stuff dreams are made of—but there has never been enough to go around. Seamus McGraw’s thorough and insightful history of the state’s water wars gives us an unsparing look at the nightmares in our past and invites us to wake up and prepare for a future of scarcity." This is a book for anyone who wishes to know "what's it all about" - this thing about water and Texas. I thought I knew a lot about the relationship of water to Texas. How wrong I was. Trust me. You want to read this book.

Fabulous book. Extremely researched and presented in fabulous format.

The library has not been able to keep this book in the library everyone is reading it.

I learned a lot by reading this book. It contains harsh but a truthful warning.

A study of the American water crisis with a look at how it has been handled in the past, and potential solutions for the future. I was particularly interested in this project because at its center are the problems Texas has with water, and since it is my home for the foreseeable feature, I need to know as much as I can about this problem in this particular geographic setting. Here in Quanah, where my little house is, there’s a drought every winter and crops have difficulty growing. Meanwhile, everybody is familiar with the great flood that drowned Houston last hurricane season. So, water is attacking Texas from all directions, and environmental regulations are particularly loose in this part of the country, so advice is needed to keep the citizens of Texas from drowning themselves. The author, Seamus McGraw, is an award-winning journalist and has published a couple of books on climate change previously. In this project, in addition to standard research methods, McGraw interviewed farmers, ranchers, businesspeople, citizen activists and politicians to gather their opinions and experiences on this issue. The book has suspense written into it, as the narrator prepares readers for a payoff and then goes back and gives historic background, so readers have a reason to read until the end. The payoff in the first chapter is that on August 5, 1969 (in the middle of another drought), Texas voted against a plan that would have re-directed the waters of the Mississippi River into it to satisfy its thirst for water. The rest of the chapter explains how Texas changed from a rural state to one dominated by industry and business around this same time. Most of the chapters have very cryptic names that do not give away their contents easily, like “Dow by Law” and “That’s the Kind of Thinking That Will Get Your Land Took from You.” The latter sounds very Texan, but it is difficult to imagine what this has to do with water. The chapter starts just as mysteriously with: “Maybe it was the way the summer sun glided through the lush leaves of the white oaks, the pecans, the hickories, and the ash on the far bank” (39). This is a very beautiful image, and McGraw continues with descriptions of boys playing, the river, oaks, and the like for a page before he starts arriving at his point: Texans were coming to the Dallas-Fort Worth area for water like they used to come for timber by 2000. The problem mentioned in the chapter title is finally explained at the end of the second page: “even landowners miles removed from the proposed reservoir site could lose control of their land in the process of providing the growing metroplex with affordable water” (40). The chapter includes lengthy dialogues between conflicting sides. It also includes a lengthy speech on the subject with specific numbers and projections. Across the book, there are great illustrations of the impact of various water-related changes on the land. This book would have been improved from a research perspective if it had more subheadings in the chapters that explained what points each section is covering. I would have appreciated if the chapters also had simpler to process titles, so I could more easily find the exact information that might be relevant to a particular research project I am doing. As it stands, it is inviting for casual readers who are interested in a good read or who might be passionate about this issue and in need of some background information. This is definitely a good thing for them. But, anybody who needs the raw data and digested information to figure out what strategies in this book can be of practical use, will just have to slow down and read the whole things to get these bits. It’s not totally inaccessible though as the Index is pretty detailed and includes the names of the main water developments covered. The “Notes” section is pretty light, as it includes articles from newspapers, court documents, development reports, and a few books. Once again, this is definitely not a scholarly, but rather a general interest book. Since a democracy decides Texas’ and the countries’ water policies, there is definitely a greater need for a readable general interest book on this topic like this project, rather than a more intensive scholarly analysis that might be unreadable for almost everybody that actually votes in America. So, great book overall, very intensely written with interesting and impactful information.Pennsylvania Literary Journal: Spring 2018 Reviews: Anaphora Literary Press

I cannot wait to finish this book. The portions I've read have been great.
