Review

This is, quite simply, the single best book I have ever read on what most of us would regard as the single most important question of philosophy: Does God exist? On all counts this book gets an A+. It is an amazing achievement. It will inevitably become a classic. --Peter Kreeft, Ph.D., Professor of Philosophy, Boston CollegeThough many sound books have been written about the ‘first cause/mover’ proof of Aristotle and St. Thomas, this is the most accessible and illustrative rendition I have encountered.  His explanations make a heavy subject engaging and easy to read. It has outstanding pedagogical value. --Robert Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D., Author, New Proofs for the Existence of GodMichael Augros is one of the smartest people I've met. His book is a very welcome and very needed contribution to the ongoing debate about the existence of God. An excellent step by step argument by one of the sharpest Thomists around. --Benjamin Wiker, Author, Answering the New Atheism

Excellent, excellent presentation of one of the demonstrations for God's existence. This book comes at a critical time, when many have been taught that science and rational thought exclude the existence or even the possibility of God; the position has been cultivated so long that many seem to buy into it automatically. Dr. Augros treats of the subject masterfully, rendering the deductive argument into terms and examples that are readily accessible even to beginners in philosophy without sacrificing any of the rigor that the endeavor demands. He also exposes the fallacies of many (and I do mean 'many') objections of the "New Atheists" and others against the existence of God. If you have time for only one read on the question of God's existence and you're willing to give the case honest consideration, then this is the book to get.

Excellent book. I've read it twice since I got it a year ago: it was well worth reading both times. Some discussions are more difficult than others, of course. But the author does a very good job of going step by step through his argument, taking more time when more time is needed. I think most people rarely encounter this kind of step-by-step logical argumentation, so take your time and make sure you comprehend what's going on from one section to the next.Several of the (atheistic) reviewers seem actually to have not read the book at all, and don't want anybody else to read it either. Pay them no heed.I would suggest only one improvement. The book divides neatly into two parts between chapters 7 and 8. The first seven chapters are the step-by-step logical argumentation that provides certainty that there is one and only one first cause that is a simple, immortal, non-material intelligence. After that comes some more speculative ponderings and replies to certain common objections. It would have been helpful, therefore, to actually have the book divided into two or more parts; e.g. Part I comprising Chapters 1 through 7, and Part II comprising Chapters 8 through 10.The style of the book is very engaging, down-to-earth, and chock-full of good humor. I suspect that some people's knee-jerk objections are actually sparked by their emotional reaction to a "philosophical" book written this way.

I'm a scientist. When I interviewed Peter Kreeft a few weeks ago on my health podcast, he recommended this book above all relating to my questions. It didn't disappoint! It's sad how many scientists think God is incompatible with science when it's quite the opposite.

The best book I've read containing arguments for the existence of God., and since I was a philosophy graduate student many years ago I have looked at quite a few. Despite the profundity of the subject this is an easy book to read for anyone who will give it his attention.Unreservedly recommended.

I liked the book a lot, but, I in my opinion the author got tied-up with too many insignificant details supporting his philosophy and took quite a while to get to the point. It was if he was being paid by the word. I think he could have written an even more engaging book by getting to the point more quickly. That said, it is well worth the read.

Dr. Augros presents us with an amalgamated review of the Cosmological (first cause), Ontological (necessary being), and Teleological (purposeful) proofs of God's existence. In their original form they all claim to be proofs, but Augros does not make that claim for this book. He claims that from self-evident and easily accessible premises (all his examples are drawn from common human experience) one can validly deduce the necessity of a purposeful, necessary, first cause which has also the qualities of being simple, infinite actual (no unrealized potential), changeless, all-knowing (across all time), and good. His aim is to deduce all of this and calls it god (lowercase 'g') which he distinguishes from God (uppercase 'G') the latter having these same qualities plus (possibly) others as described in the holy books and articles of specific, Earthly, religious faiths. He notes explicitly that he cannot, nor is he trying, to deduce God in this sense, but only god. His underlying purpose is to demonstrate that the conviction that god is real is rational and need not proceed from some specific religious (institution) faith. God (god) is the necessary (though not necessarily the direct) source of everything that can be distinguished in the universe of our experience including the universe itself and the existence within it of minds capable of reflecting on and finding value within it (He uses the connection between the physical universe and the value we call beauty extensively in his later examples). If "god exists" is true and can be deduced from indisputable premises, then accepting god's existence must surely be rational.Does Dr. Augros succeed? Mostly, yes, but I think not entirely. I must be up front about my own bias. As a theologian and philosopher of religion, I have no problem with any of his conclusions. I think many of his examples and arguments deliver on what he promises, self-evident premises leading to necessary conclusions and their corollaries. But in a few cases I think his premises can be challenged because they depend on multiple (possible) uses and meanings of words in English, or because they are circular and presuppose some part of their conclusion. If god exists, it is easy to deduce a conclusion that this is necessarily so. But without that presupposition, no deduction from purely contingent experience, can quite get us to necessity when it is the connection between "what we cannot imagine" and what is actually the case that is in question. His deduction of the goodness of the first cause depends on a notion of "nobility" and that in turn rests on a Thomistic (Thomas Aquinas being an acknowledged and important source for the author) interpretation of the English word 'perfect' or 'perfection', usage that is not common in modern English. In the second half of the book Dr. Augros turns from deductive arguments to address objections to the general forms of the Cosmological, Ontological, and Teleological arguments along with his variations. Again bearing in mind my theological bias I have to say that I found a lot of ideas in this section that reflect and would improve my own writing on the subject. Although somewhat beyond his main purpose, Dr. Augros senses a need to investigate the "Problem of Evil". He introduces a simple but important distinction between 'bad things' and 'evil proper'. His subsequent discussion focuses on 'bad things' and he makes some very good distinctions and observations here about what most philosophers lump into a single category of "natural evils". His discussion of "evil proper" is more limited. He never gets into what it is, but instead contents himself with pointing out that it must always be contingent and temporally limited compared to the infinity of god and what that can purportedly do for the sufferer. An easy read, Who Designed the Designer shows why even metaphysical questions have to stop somewhere. This is "philosophy of religion" strictly speaking and would be a good example of "doing philosophy of religion" to students or anyone else who was curious about some of what philosophers of religion actually do. If you already think of yourself as a philosopher of religion you will find here more than a few thoughtful arguments and distinctions not found in other writers. Not complicated, not technical philosophy. If it isn't 100% successful nailing its conclusion, it is an insightful attempt!

In If These Walls Could Talk Bill Schroeder and Drew Olson provide a comprehensive look at the Milwaukee Brewers, paying tribute to the great players like Robin Yount and Paul Molitor, reliving memorable moments on the diamond, sharing a smattering of tales, most only mildly amusing, giving credit to behind the scenes staffers like the director of clubhouse operations and the director of team travel, and reflecting on the challenges of broadcasting a game. It’s a good book to just spot read because the narrative is bogged down with a bit too many details. Nevertheless, If These Walls Could Talk succeeds in educating the reader on the mechanics of the game, and the stress of it as well, both for the players on the field and for the behind the scenes staffers who makes things happen. Never again will I complain that baseball players are overpaid. A life in baseball is far from glamorous. Even though the book covers all the bases (no pun intended) about the organization and the game, the manager-player relationship is left out. The team had a succession of managers in the 1980s that are barely mentioned by the authors.

If you are a Brewers fan especially, or a baseball fan in general, this is a MUST read. The book is full of tidbits, inside information and the information we all wish we were privy to if we were able to visit the locker rooms during the baseball season. The humor and the insight are wonderful and it is a great read all around. Highly recommend picking up a copy and reading and even perhaps rereading just before the start of the baseball season or any time the reader requires a baseball "fix!"

I was expecting mostly a book talking about the current and former players and interesting stories about them. While there are some bios of the legends like Yount and Uecker, probably the majority of the book goes behind the scenes and goes into areas the average fan doesn't see, such as what does the traveling secretary or TV producer does. I definitely learned some things, but it would of been nice if they covered other areas that would be of interest, such as how the concessions team or stadium/scoreboard operations does to get ready for a game. The book also seems to end abruptly as well. I'm not sure how it should end, but it just seemed to be out of nowhere. Still an overall good read for any Brewer or dedicated baseball fan that wants to learn more on what happens behind the scenes.

Bill Schroeder has been with the Brewers for a long time now as a player and then an announcer. He has become a real part of this organization and his love and loyalty for the Crew shines in this book. Fun read.

As a lifelong Brewer fan this information was very interesting and very entertaining. If you love Brewer baseball then you will definitely like this book. I have always been a fan of Bill Schroeder and I'm glad he took the time to put this together.

If you are a Milw Brewer fan, you need to read this book. If you are not, buy it just to read the section on Bob Uecker. I couldn't stop laughing. now i know how Bill Schroder got the nickname "Rock". Excellent read.

If you like the Brewers you will enjoy this book.

Gave it to my dad for his birthday. He liked it. It's nice light reading.

#823,147 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The Cobra in the Barn is a collection of stories, mostly from the US, but a few from Europe, about lost classic cars which were rediscovered. The cars range from sports cars, Woodies, one-of-a-kind or special-built vehicles, to luxury touring cars.=== The Good Stuff ===* The book is a pretty easy read, and I read the book in a day or so. The book is a collection of short stories, mostly less than 5 pages in length, so there are numerous authors, but for the most part the stories are well written and quick moving.* Many of the stories are almost hard to believe, as cars have literally gone around the world and ended up back with their original owners. Other stories capture a slice of American life, and often the story of the car is also the story of the owners and their families.* The stories vary in their completeness, but many take the car from almost the builder's shipping dock all the way to their permanent homes with collectors. Along the way we meet professional car "hunters", serious collectors who had a very lucky day, and determined buyers who spent years, and in some cases decades, tracking down and persuading an owner to sell a car.=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===* Many of the stories are remarkably similar. Someone discovers a car in an old barn, they spend years persuading the owner to sell it to them, they they restore the vehicle and live happily ever after. Quite a few of these stories just sort of blended into one another.* I am only a casual "car guy", so in quite a few of the tales I really didn't understand the attraction of the vehicle. Indeed, I had never even heard of several of them. Some of the authors are better than others at telling the casual car fan why the car was important, and what was so special about this particular one. More photos, even if they weren't of the exact car in the tale, would have helped.* Several of the stories end shortly after the found vehicle is purchased by its new owner and some form of restoration begins. It would have been nice if the stories had followed the vehicle to its ultimate configuration. Similarly, it would have been fun to know more about the purchase price (disclosed in roughly 50% of the stories), and especially the final value of the restored vehicle (rarely disclosed).=== Summary ===The book is fine for what tries to do- namely tell the story of people stumbling over a rare vehicle and their efforts to purchase it. I would have preferred fewer stories and more details in each one, but others may appreciate the greater variety. If you are a car buff, or just love the "man finds valuable car" stories, give it a read. I actually enjoyed it, but just wished for more.

Every car nut dreams of the great "barn find," and this book seemed to promise vignettes of some of the best, but disppointed me in a few ways. The quality of the writing covers a spectrum from "what I did on my summer vacation" type ramblings to the professional prose of Road and Track's Peter Egan. I had to read a couple of the stories two or three times to clarify who the people were and what the perspective of the writer was. Some of the chapters lacked photographs, or decent photographs, so the reader is left to imagine what was actually discovered, which would seem like a no-no for a book like this. Some beautiful photos were attached at the end of the book, said to be in some "mystery location" so that really did not connect to the rest of the book. My only other comment would be that if you're expecting this to be all about sports cars, it's not...several of the chapters are about big old touring cars, one-offs, woodies, and limousines. A decent read for car enthusiasts but not great. If I was editing it, I'd chop a lot of the banter and make the stories clear, and make sure there were photos to document each story from "find" to post-restoration if that was the end of the story.

Tom Cotter is the quintessential car guy. He has been a contributor to R&T for over 2 decades, has authored numerous books and even was the PR guy for Charlotte Motor Speedway so he is the real deal. This book is a magic carpet - transporting you to dusty barns, moldy garages and secret hiding places where all of these wonderful old cars were squirreled away. One thing I really liked about the format is that the stories are bite-sized - easily consumed in those quiet moments when you need a car fix. I am reminded of Jeff Goldblum's character in The Big Chill describing the length of stories he wrote for his magazine. Maybe not the most fitting words for a family forum such as this but if you remember the line, it fits here in the most complimentary way. ;-)A good read for a winter evening when the summer driving season is months away and you are looking to recharge your car buzz until the croci bloom.

There could be a Cobra or a Viper, a StingRay or even a Ferrari or a Lincoln Continental in a barn near you. Or, perhaps more likely, in a barn at the end of a rainbow somewhere. You probably won't find a Bugatti or an S-Type Invicta, but the many lucky car hunters, and at least a couple of pretty good writers, who contributed to this book have found interesting, buyable, restorable cars in barns, gardens and fields. Their stories are page-turners; their secrets: patience, plenty of travel, winning phone skills, and eyes and ears wide open at all times.Whether you hunt for rare cars, hope to stumble upon them serendipitously, or just dream of doing so, you will enjoy "The Cobra in the Barn," Highly recommended. The correct spelling is Duesenberg, despite being spelled a couple of other ways in the book.

A fun book to read for anyone into the search and restoration of anything old. Many stories are very touching. I am not a strong reader and I blew right through the book in a few nights. There are a variety of cars included in the stories...they are all good stories, the actual type of car didn't affect my attention to the book. Very well written by a very intelligent man. See YouTube series "Barn Find Hunter" for live stories and finds by Tom.

As a project manager with more than 20 years of experience in the field, I found many useful reminders, tips, and helpful practices in this book. I especially enjoyed learning about industry practices from great global companies like IBM, Boeing, and Philips.

Good PM book.

Excellent book with tangible examples!

It is a very interesting book and very useful to my academic interests

Excellent book to have for referencing and practical guidance as well.

This book is okay. It includes some good case studies. There were really no big breakthroughs or ah-ha moments for me when I read this book.

New book!!!! Arrived early!!

This is a textbook.I feel as though I need to say this because it isn't immediately obvious from the book's listing. As a textbook, it has the advantage of great thoroughness. Wondering about the concept of best practices? Curious about various possible methodologies in project management? Contemplating the value of informal project management? Interested in the ways culture and management support might affect project management? Studying up for an exam on the subject? You will find the answers to all your questions in this book. You will also find a wonderful variety of case studies and some nice infographics. There are some surprising things in here, too. One of my favorite "What the heck?" sections is an extensive discussion of the role of the Seven Deadly Sins (yep -- sloth, lust, gluttony, all that) in project management. I bet you don't see that every day, and the examples were very interesting. As a college teacher, I have a strong appreciation for textbooks, but we also have to recognize that they're not designed to be a gripping read. They're not even designed to be read clear through from beginning to end. You've just enjoyed the chapter on Barriers to Project Management in Emerging Markets, for example, and you turn the page and find only a rudimentary segue into the next, quite separate topic. This is an excellent textbook, and anyone who has a regular need for project management case studies should have it on the shelf (or on their Kindle). If you're a project manager looking for professional development, this is probably not what you need. If you're a business owner hoping to gain insight into DIY project management, it's absolutely not what you want.
