I own a number of the "over in the..." books which combine counting with learning about animals in a particular ecosystem - plus they also have finding hidden animals on each page. However, none of them addressed the northern California redwoods which is important to us, so I picked up this book. I give the illustrations a 4/5 because there was a lack of refined detail in the artwork that made everything seem blurry plus the bald eagle was flying high up without any close example to better see its features. The hidden animals were also either hard to see or blatantly obvious. The text gets a 3/5. The pages always end with a "..." to rhyme with the next number (which I liked in Ten Tiny Tadpoles, but do not like here). The overall book is a 3/5. I also was not that engaged by the types of animals presented - I did like the bats and banana slugs, but some things like ladybugs and bumble bees just seemed a poor choice to be the main animal on the page. I mean you can find those species everywhere across the US, so why were those so important to include in the redwood ecosystem over other area-specific species? I wanted the main animals shown to be like pine martins and marbled murrelet. I also think limiting the species to what was in the trees left out a lot of animals like the Roosevelt elk.Overall, the book earns a 3/5

My two year old absolutely loves this book. The pictures are beautiful and it gives her an appreciation for the busy ecosystem of the Redwoods.

Very cute. My boy is into squirrels and chipmunks lately and the pictures are wonderful.

Beautiful illustrations with short rhyming text about animals found in the forest. Extra information at the end of the book. Was a hit with toddlers.

I read this on recommendation from my brother and there is really no book out there like it. David goes through what he sees were the core values of presence that Jesus modeled for his disciples. David gives new vocabulary for how we do evangelism. Except it's more organic, and the Gospel has many entry points into people's lives. This is the way that I want to live, this is the way that I want to help bring the kingdom of God into the world. If you are looking for a different way to do church, then this book is for you. It gives practical guidelines for how we as followers of Jesus can be a faithful presence in a world that is desperate to see it. I also see this book as a practical way to implement some of the principles in Shane Claiborne's " Irresistible Revolution." My only criticism of the book is minor; I feel that some of the chapters could have been tightened up. There is a little bit of redundancy. However it is well worth your time

This book is a remarkable description of the ways Christ is especially present with his people. It is thoroughly biblical and well researched. He really remade my thinking on the Lord's Supper. It's not a take your pick along the spectrum from mystical Catholic sacrament to flimsy Protestant ordinance. The heart is that Christ is with us and this extends into the community.The author's view on "white privileged" is very odd. If the poor and sick, who we identify with and seek out, are characterized by a lack of privilege, then the privileged are simply the opposite. To say a race is privileged in itself is at best a specious historical argument and at worst the very definition of white supremacy. Minor quibble though--buy and read this book, 5 stars.

It has affected the way I view my time in and out of my office, in my part-time job at an elementary school, and in particular as I minister to the overall church body—including the children and youth."Faithful Presence" unpacks the phrase that has appeared in a variety of Fitch's blogs, podcasts, and seminar discussions. He lays out seven disciplines for churches seeking to find where God is already at work in their communities and neighbourhoods. This is far from another "church growth program" designed for a boom in numbers. In fact, being faithful to Fitch's book will challenge the expectations of many church members. Pei: Architect of Time, Place and Purpose," I nearly tore my wallet apart pulling out my credit card at warp speed, placing the order on amazon.com.As fellow reviewer, Don Blankenship would say, "Folks, this is great stuff!" It has great pictures and is written for those twelve and older; however, so is my local newspaper and it is not half as interesting.I love a good biography and this one really fit the bill for me. I spent two hours and 92 pages of pure joy reading and viewing the pictures that document the life and accomplishments of Leoh Ming Pei. Rubalcaba displays a half dozen of Pei's most notable buildings constructed in America, Beijing, Hong Kong, Paris, and Japan where he studied the people and sites before building architecture suitable for those locations, but within the politics, budget and indigenous constraints.Jill follows the times line that begins with Pei's April 26, 1917 birth in China, move to the United States in 1935; graduation from MIT in 1940; marriage to Eileen Loo in 1942;, the birth of his first son, T'ing Chung in 1945; graduation with a Masters in Architecture from Harvard in 1946, the same year his second son, Chien Chung "Didi" was born; the birth of his third son, Li Chung "Sandi" in 1950, becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1955; the birth of Liane, Pei's only daughter in 1960; Pei's retirement in 1990 and beyond.A premier name in architecture, Pei explained that a full understanding of three essential elements--time, palace and purpose--is his approach to achieve an ideally balanced structure.I whole heartedly recommend this clear and concise biographic snap shot of a quiet, unassuming family man who has left his ingenious mark on this planet through creative architecture.Enjoy!

Disappointing attempt at an anthology of a great Architect's life work. Incomplete with mediocre photos.

To be honest, I was a novice to the works of this genius. I had heard of him, but not connected the name to the buildings, etc. Consider mebasically a bonehead before finding this book. However, he has been elevated to architectural hero now that I've read it. The segment on hisupdating the design for the Louvre is worth the price of the book, for example. Just the telling of his approach, his innovative solutions tohuman flow, light, and intricate details to update the ancient building (put in place before electricity and indoor plumbing), is astonishing. I've visited Falling water by Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Marin County Civic Center (same architect) and the Parthenon in Athens and thePantheon and Vatican in Rome, but this book brought home the brilliance of one of our current day masters. The only other architectural book I like better than this one is: A Pattern Language, Towns, Building, Construction by Christopher Alexander,Sara Ishikawa, and Murray Silverstein. If you like architecture even remotely, be sure to check into it. It will change how you see everything!

This is an accessible introduction to the motivations and creations of an architect who helped define innovation in the second half of the 20th century.Pei, a student of Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier, has designed a string of monumental (and sometimes controversial) buildings reflecting his thoughtful approach to purpose and place ... avoiding aping his influences by respecting each project. Readers, especially the youth market to which this book is tailored, will be exposed to both the background (a child of privilege growing up in the tumultuous China of the early 20th century) that helped shape Pei's approach to his work and examples of notable buildings and his creative approach.Naturally, I was particularly interested to read about the buildings I've see or visited: Mile High Center, National Center for Atmospheric Research, National Gallery of Art East Building, and the Louvre. Some I've visited that are listed but not described include Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Museum of Fine Arts West Wing (Boston), and Court House Square (Denver). My advice: if you've not experienced Pei buildings, take advantage of any opportunity to rectify that omission.The book helps us understand that the architect's work is bound less by style than by continuity of intention. For any student wondering how to plan an education and career, it provides a thoughtful model and inspiration. For the rest of us, the author helps us more fully experience the creations of a master. Think of this volume as a cross between a coffee table book, a biography, and a textbook.

The Left is very slowly and methodically pushing this agenda to the fullest in my country. Every incoming college student should take time to read this work; because it won't be on any formal required reading list. This is the Left's agenda; make no mistake about it. The agenda might initially sound attractive. This is the danger. It is an agenda from those who believe they know what's best for us all. And in this arrogant approach takes away our individual liberty to believe and act as we, speaking only for myself, see fit by our own unique world view. In my case, my eternal view.

This a very brief essay on the topic of socialism that explains why, in the author's perspective, that ideology is so perverse. In this vein the moral issue absorbs the greatest portion of the book. To do this, Haskins, elaborate some moral cases that illustrate his point. For some readers that will appear like a caricature, and it maybe that way. To me, in fact, that's the problem with the exposition of cases that have been, like here, "elaborated" with that purpose only. Now, the important point is clear: socialism, even halfway, which means not completely developed, can harm as much as could do if it were. In other words, there's no option. The middle ground is so evil and harmful as the total one. I'm a little pesimistic so I guess in the end it will prevail. Bad ideas do not depend on the outcome, especially if they have been built upon hopes like a better world, whatever that means. By the way, Haskins doesn't give us hope at all. But it deserves to pay attention on what he has to say. Even if at last we loose our freedom. Or the most precious part of it.

Too often books that criticize socialism is simply critical against big government but this book is different. This book challenges Marx's idea of socialism along with modern European style socialism. The author quotes Marx's works to make sure he is not attacking a caricature of socialism but rather what Marx truly believed was socialist. This book does a fantastic job in challenging the morality of Marxism as a whole not just big government which would have been a let down if it was just that.

Loved its brevity yet lots of information and a different approach to denounce Socialism. Not bad because it does not work, but that it is immoral.

This book is a well reasoned and interesting treatise on what's wrong with socialism. It is relatively short and well-written, and highly recommended.

It mirrors my own long standing historical research and conclusions about the severe, disastrous, evils of socialism/communism.Forty four years in our business management, marketing, and advertising arena have given me deep, abiding faith that America’s foundational freedoms provide the most effective way to individual prosperity, achievement, security, and contentment ever devised in this world.This is yet another must read for those fellow Americans who know how vital it now is to counter the press toward this evil, murderous, system of government by socialist/communist politicians in present day America.

Worth reading. This book details all that is evil and just plain wrong about socialism. It's well written and very well researched. Highly recommended.

Every fact given can be easily verified through existing news and literary archives. I was born in 1934 and lived through all of the history referenced in this book and vividly remember all the facts and events given in this well thought-out book. People, you had better believe this.

I'd never been to the Keys and we used this as our travel guide in addition to Yelp reviews. My primary complaint about the Keys is that what they call "beaches" may be rocky, hard, and full of underwater growth. We visited a number of Key "beaches" and never found one anywhere near as good as those in Southern California. However, the ocean water in Florida is much warmer, which is nice.

Fodor's guides are very reliable for the causal tourist who isn't too adventurous, but still offers valuable information on a very easy to use format. Recommended!

Just went to Keys for a week, this guide helped a lot. contains much info without having to look stuff up online all the time

Drones have been a hot topic recently, but even thought they've been around for awhile I don't really know all that much about them. To that end, Drones was a really helpful book. It goes over the history of drones and how they're used, both by the military and commercially. To someone like me who knew virtually nothing about drones other than what I see online, the information was really interesting and well organized. I'm inspired to look up more information and learn what I can! My favorite thing about the book is how balanced it is. The author goes into the benefits and potential issues with drones, which makes for a well-rounded read!

The book is a wonderful guide on Drones by Brenda Foster. Drones were originally used for military action but are now used for commercial and personal use. The book started with the brief introduction of drones and moved on to a detail history of drones. Then there are listed some of the advantages of using drones in today’s world. While there are plenty of benefits and uses for drones, not everyone is happy with them. Many people have concerns about their privacy being violated and question the safety of drones.

Interesting book about drones. I had learned a lot from when it was used in wars several years ago, the benefit to transport people and supplying food, etc. It is packed with loads of information. And I seen it used in the tv show "24" with lead star Kiefer Sutherland Jack Bauer. They stopped terrorist from doing bad things to people and places with the drones.

Interesting history and uses of drones and what may come to be in the use of them.

A lot of people are talking about drones lately, so this book is really timely. It presents a lot of interesting information but is an easy-to-read length and format. The book is unbiased, which is really a breath of fresh air since drones are such a controversial topic of late. If you're curious and want to learn more about what exactly drones are and what they might be doing, check out this little book.

This book served to fill in some information about drones that I knew nothing about. Fact is right now anyone can own one. For good or evil. And that's a sobering thought.

I didn’t know much about drones but, like many others, see increasing numbers of stories about them in the news. This book opened my eyes to the wide ranging applications for drones, and the security implications that accompany their widespread use. This is a great book for anyone looking to understand more about drones, their uses, and the impact of that use.

I'm pro-drone, and even this report made me shake my head. If this book didn't claim to be unbiased, it'd be a fine short book, but it does claim to be unbiased. Unfortunately, it's all just fluff.The biggest argument against drones is privacy issues about how they can spy on anyone, anywhere, nearly forever. The author's recommendation? Paint the drones. Here is a line taken from the Privacy section: "... are hopeful that those opposed to them won’t mind so much if they are brighter in color or more visually appealing." What does this have to do with privacy? Nothing, but that's what the book recommends to help with "privacy" and then moves on.The author ends with the claim that instead of worrying about your rights, a "small amount" of personal rights should be given up: "... hope that citizens would be willing to give up a small amount of personal privacy in order to live in a location where there is less crime, less drug activity, and less risk to everyone" and that "[n]oise and privacy issues are common complaints. However, what [drones] offer is well beyond such complaints."For a book that claims to be unbiased, it seems to offer a lot of government-approved statements while dismissing the entire other side of the argument.
