I honestly didn't know what to expect and wasn't feeling particularly enthusiastic about starting this series, but I was shocked by how much I loved this book! This was more of a 4.5 star read for me, but I didn't feel good about rounding down for this one.Despite Paige sort of falling into the classic YA "chosen one" trope, she's a really enjoyable narrator. She develops a lot during the book, and by the end, she has come to this realization that a lot of her pre-Rephaim life was not what she thought it to be (no spoilers, don't worry). She did bug me a couple of times with her relentless sarcasm and cynicism, but it was nothing worth writing home about.Arcturus... what can I say? I joked with some friends that I was worried I was temporarily trading in my feminist card for how much I loved his character, despite his being portrayed as her "captor". I won't spoil the ending, but there's a lot more than meets the eye with this big teddy bear.There are also a handful of really delightful side characters, like Julian, Liss, and Michael, all of which I just wanted to squeeze and hug and keep safe forever.This was my first book by Samantha Shannon, of course, and I was really pleased by the writing in it. It wasn't anything extraordinary, but it definitely did the job for me. She uses a lot of words that are not ones you would find in everyday speech, but the physical book has a glossary in the back with definitions. I didn't find that I needed it more than three or four times, honestly.The world itself is built pretty efficiently, and since it's a magical realism book, there isn't much to tell that isn't already the reader's basic knowledge (like locations, etc). I enjoyed how in-depth the world of voyants went, with references to a multitude of different varieties (dreamwalkers, soothsayers, oracles, etc). (Fun fact on the topic: the hadal zone, as referenced in this book, is also a term for the deepest parts of the ocean. I enjoyed that comparison!)If you're familiar with the YA/NA dystopian genre, I really don't think this will be an earth-shattering read for you, but it is a fun story with a lot of enjoyable characters and action. If you absolutely hate the "master-turned-lover" trope, you may not be able to delve into this one much, but then again, this is a slightly atypical variation on that theme. There are definitely some cliche moments throughout it, but altogether, I found this a delightful read that kept me up late and craving more, and I will definitely be continuing the series!

What an amazing debut and first book to a series!!! Samantha Shannon has created such a rich and complex London that is so intriguing to read about. Her writing style is absolutely breathtaking. To the way she weaves the plots together, to her character descriptions, and also her battle sequences!! The Bone Season is definitely a complex world to dive into. It can be somewhat confusing and jarring at times if you don't understand the world, but there is a glossary in the back that can help you understand it better if your having a hard time. I on the other hand love complexity so I was sold from the get go. I knew I was going to love this story just from the first chapter because it sank its hooks into me deep. The characters of The Bone Season are another highlight of the story even though you mostly focus on Paige (who is awesome), you do get little backstories into some of the other characters. I do want to see these characters a little more in future books!! The plot of TBS is a high octane and intense roller coaster. It sets up a great story for what is to be a seven book series but is able to keep an air of mystery which leaves me wanting more, oh so much more!! To conclude, I thought TBS was a wonderful first installment and I cannot wait to see more of this story unfold!! On to book 2 please!!

I've been oblivious to super hyped up books this year. Apparently, Samantha Shannon was touted as the "next J.K. Rowling."While the this series may also be a 7-parter (!!!), the similarities between this book and the Harry Potter series stop there. Where the Harry Potter books immersed you into a world of wonder and magic, The Bone Season throws readers into a dark, big-brotherish world where possessing magical abilities is a punishable offense.I enjoyed The Bone Season for being unique and dark and thrilling.But, there are two things I'd warn new readers about, which are:1. Things are explained quickly and in rapid succession right away. - There is a very high learning curve in The Bone Season. There is English street slang to learn as well as tons of terms related to voyants (clairvoyants) and their underground world as well as the system that keeps magical abilities under wraps (Scion). PLUS, within the voyant world, there are tons of different types of voyants and different names for spirits.Pro tip: E-book users - Use the glossary at the end of the book. I didn't know it was there until I'd finished (doh!). It will help you keep the barrage of new information somewhat straight in your head.2. Things get pretty brutal. - I've read more descriptive and violent acts in other books, but I think the sheer volume of things that happen in the book surprised me. It fits with the world - it's a no-tolerance place for voyants, so people like Paige have to keep their noses down and senses on high alert.Don't be shocked by the amount of brutality in The Bone Season.After initially getting used to the above-mentioned quirks, I sunk into the book very quickly. Paige is a scrappy 20 something who works for Jaxon Hall, one of the most feared Mime Lords in London. Mime Lord is a fancy name for voyant gang leader or mobster. She helps him find other voyants because of her unique ability to escape her consciousness for brief moments of time and enter another's conscious, or dreamscape.The intricacy of voyants and their abilities was something I loved. It was complicated but rich. Plus, it allows for so many variations and lots of surprises. This element of The Bone Season really took it from fantasy-esque to hardcore high fantasy. It was refreshing for me because not many YA fantasy books are that developed and epic (Falling Kingdoms and The Girl of Fire and Thorns come to mind).I found myself liking Paige but being afraid of her at the same time. She's resilient to a fault and very, very stubborn. But, she's loyal and true, like most strong heros.Even though the romance is a bit predictable, it's hot. Very hot. Lots of tension and build-up. Certainly no instalove around these parts.OVERALL:If you can set the hype aside and focus on the fascinating premise of the hardcore fantasy world, I think you'll really enjoy this book. Although, be warned, it's an investment of time (7 books), and the beginning may have your head spinning with an onslaught of info. I found The Bone Season to be a strong debut and truly love the complex world of voyants and the non-magical loving Scion.

If everyone had to read this book our country would be in better shape. It made me more aware of the impact the fast food industry has on the health of our country and our people. Although I still occasionally eat fast food this book made me keep it to an absolute minimum.

The reason I chose this book because it uncovers the horrors behind fast food besides the obvious health implications fast food has on people. I also chose it because it can relate to health class. I can talk my students about how easy it is for E-coli to develop and spread. All it takes is one time of not cleaning you knives or cutting board to get it. I can also talk to them about the importance of finding foods that are home grown by a farmer and doesn’t have any pesticides in it. Fresh meat, vegetables and fruits are healthier than processed food. This book relates so well with health implications because if other countries are gaining weight because of our fast food than fast food is the problem. We should try to stay away from it as much as possible if we want to live long and healthy lives.

Unlike the restaurants and food preparatory processes discussed, the statistics and case studies of Fast Food Nation are palatable. The book succeeds in taking a complex industry, introducing the reader to its history in the context of American industrial development, and disassembling it out by its major components. One of the more memorable sections of the book focuses on fast food employees, the growing standardization of their roles over time, and the extreme measures some companies pursue in order to avoid any consequences of hiring an inconsistent, unreliable workforce. Fast Food Nation makes a great effort to identify many of the cultural, personal, and political issues in play within the fast food industry, though it does little to incite change. If the book presented concrete solutions, I do not recall many of them, it works better as a highlight reel of atrocity rather than a meditation on possible improvements. I read the book in 2012, 11 years after Fast Food Nation was originally published but I have failed to see any of the changes highlighted in the book taking hold. Democracy still appears to be smothered by special interests and lobbying, and despite other media emphasizing the horrifying state of our food industry we seem stuck in that same feedback loop. Ultimately Fast Food Nation will open your eyes to many of the issues in the fast food industry, though perhaps the greatest lesson is how much more it will take to actually incite change.

The purpose of this book, about the fast food industry, is best summarized by the author within the introduction: "I do not mean to suggest that fast food is solely responsible for every social problem now haunting the United States. In some cases (such as the malling and sprawling of the West) the fast food industry has been a catalyst and a symptom of larger economic trends. They say the winners write the histories. Maybe. This book is an excellent treatise on the bravery and professionalism of the Dutch and Belgium forces which actually did the tough fighting which won the Battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo. A little known scandal of history is how Wellington scorned his Dutch and Belgian allies before the fight, had his bacon saved by them at Quatre Braswhen he had not bothered to gather his forces from all over Belgium to face Napoleon's already reported advance, and then won the Battle of Waterloo by the Dutch and Belgian regiments facing down the Imperial Guard and the best of the French Army. He went back to England where he in his own writings, and his numerous sycophants in theirs, continued to snub their allies and lionize Wellington and his English soldiers as the sole victors of the battle. Dr. Baker-Smith has courageously bucked the trend within the English-language histories, and brings out the amazing details of the courageous Dutch-Belgian forces in the campaign. Dutch and Belgian historians have given more balanced coverage to this campaign for the last century and a half, but who reads Dutch/Fleming in our own culture? I really appreciated the way this book opened my eyes to the Wellington propaganda machine, and corrected my understanding of the true history of this campaign. I'll say this, as you look through history, if anyone is the master of propaganda (perhaps aside from Russia) it's the English. But don't let my rant deter you from picking up this neat, little photograph of a little story in the Napoleonic literature. The author only mentions the Wellington scam, and then gets in with the story. I give it four stars because I think it would have benefited from more tactical.maps of the movements and positions of the forces.

It's a tale of endless discoveries and of varying opinions, versions, erroneous conclusions and rethinking of what we thought we knew about this history.So in all this sea of information any new book on the topic really has to explode with a good basic telling of the campaign to the general reader and starting historians, and also satisfy with intelligent indulgence the niche it explores related to a particular angle it brings to an already savvy Waterloo informed community.This book caught my eye right away as do most collected-works featuring the controversial topic of the Netherland's kingdom military role in the Waterloo campaign. This controversy usually revolving around actually clarifying misconceptions, lies, paranoia and self-inflicted painful bias attitudes that many ultra-nationals typically begrudgingly hold against sources that expose as tripe their maliciously held reinventions of history against targeted non-guilty nationalities.I was very eager to read this book. Overall it's a fantastic compact historical source filled lavishly with witness accounts, other notable authors opinions of a wide variety of campaign events. The book tackles all controversies and mostly moves along at a pleasing reading pace.Avoiding any spoiler alerts I'm writing a lengthy summarized review; despite appearances of being too telling, my review is hardly revealing of the detailed content itself.The writer is obviously expertly familiar with all aspects of Napoleonic history and in telling a well written story that sticks with common-sense.Chapters are delightfully short in this 200 page book. It starts with gratitude to many helpers including British sources. Very thankfully, the history of the Netherlands Kingdom is clarified in a lovely concise short few pages from its Belgian and Dutch separate beginnings and various Kingdoms inclusions of each before expanding on the Congress of Vienna's creation of the Kingdom. The King is often mentioned in the creation of the new Dutch-Belgian army and the Nassau regiments within - and importantly dwells upon the backgrounds of the multi-lingual, Peninsular veteran Prince of Orange and important generals Rebecque, Perponcher and Saxe-Weimar [ who all crucially saved the Allied army and Prussians from disaster by independent quick-thinking actions taken early on June 15th when the surprise Napoleon's French offensive struck at Charleroi between their allies' armies ].The short chapters proceed to carefully interweave the historical campaign story with the commonly-held controversies associated with the Netherland's army as the appeared. Intelligently all the accusations and myths are explored in an open manner with counter-witnesses, logical conclusions, plausible speculations. Pre-war logistics and preparation of the Netherland's army is covered in one chapter, as are Allied army HQ intelligence reports and patrol messages covered in another.The tempo of he book rises strikingly with the chapter tackling the crucial June 15th manouevres by the Prince of Orange and battle-experienced staff of the Netherland's units closest to the opening French advance. Whereas Wellington clearly initially ordered ALL his troops to concentrate at points away from nearing with his Prussian allies as was the initial plan, instead the Netherland's staff did the unthinkable and smartest option - disobey Wellington's orders and instead hold onto the obvious blocking spot which prevented Napoleon's wing commander Ney from effectively splitting the allies in two and ultimately forcing a game-ending defeat on Blucher and thus thereafter compelling the outnumbered army of Wellington to run back to the Belgian ports. The essay related to Wellington's clumsy counter-moves upon reacting to the opening French hostilities is well explained with diverse information references and thus clarifying the legend of Wellington's deceit to the Prussian commanders that his army was assembling in the area very quickly when in fact it would take 2 days before his army could nearly fully combine.The author smartly explores all the actual moves and reasoning behind each Allied commander's decisions that critical day of June 15...... timing was everything - including the veteran Nassau commander Saxe-Weimar's own initiative to hustle his battalions of Nassauers to the crossroads of Quatre Bras from a few miles away - arriving barely 1 hour before a French Imperial Guard probe could capture the campaign winning prize that would have opened a triumphant French march up to Brussels.The book then intricately details the myths and error-filled impressions of cowardice by witnesses and historians of the Netherland's army at the battles of Quatre-Bras and Waterloo. Added are accounts of British and Prussian command follies - particularly both Blucher and Wellington being smug in believing Napoleon was in no position to launch an offensive against them before the Coalition Allies' other armies would arrive by July 1815.Also pointed out in dedicated chapters are the expected topic of performance of Bylandt's brigade - untold heroics at Quatre-Bras and undeserved scorn at Waterloo - covered as well, General Chasse/ Col.Detmers brigade finale-attack that had the hidden 'glory' of sending the first Imperial Middle Guard attack-column running from its stalled position against that brave part of British Gen.Halkett's brigade which defiantly made a last stand choice and was even readying to charge those Guards themselves - This suppressed episode gets no comparison to the glory and accolades given to the Scots Greys similarly decisive scattering of much of one of D'Erlon's divisions. The rescue of the Scots Grey's by Gen.Ghingy's 'foreigner' cavalry is also highlighted as is General Tripp's 'hidden' Heavy cavalry charge against the French cavalry supporting D'Erlon that seems to have initiated Uxbridge's own decisive Heavy cavalry charges. Mentions are made of equally important roles of Saxe-Weimar's Nassauer troops at Hougoumont stronghold and at the fortified positions on Wellington's left flank where the Prussians were expected to link up.The author also portrays the other allied contingents the Brunswickers and KGL units using related perceptions, histories, roles they played alongside numerous controversies and myths about them; particularly the much debated Prince of Orange perceived 2 big battle blunders are openly discussed as is his noted bravery and strategic intelligence. Lack of British official and High Command credit to known Netherland's army successes are discussed.A very poignant after-battle study is made - somewhat excessively in being spread out in 3 further chapters with former stated information becoming repetitive.I was tempted to give a 4-star rating because there are some minor historical mistakes [ -including; responsibility of French cavalry charge decisions, numbers of defenders at La Haye Sainte strongpoint, Grouchy and Ney clear strategic orders they were given in campaign, and the idea Grouchy could have simply marched westwards to join Napoleon in spite of no roads and flooded waterways in the way],. And there are crucial omissions of certain facts that would provide for strong arguments if not conclusive evidence; ie, many British witness accounts stating seeing Bylandt's brigade fought alongside Picton's 2 brigades against D'Erlon's attack, and also the most striking of a well-read British soldier [ Halkett's brigade ] witness account describing Chasse's glorious charge against the Guard are not fully recounted here for some strange reason.My only other biggest peeves with the book which does have nice pictures in it, are that there is no detailed tables for order of battle shown for the Netherland's army of 1815 - a necessity in most army-specific collective-works books in my opinion. Another flop in my opinion are no battle maps are added to expose controversy errors [ ie, Bylandt's brigade's true position not exposed on June 18th and its subsequent place still in battle after D'Erlon's attack] - and the battle positions across Wellington's line of the various units of Chasse and Perponcher's and the Nassau battalions at Waterloo. A map of the June 15th/16th positions of the Netherland's army units near/ at Quatre-Bras would have been an excellent addition too. I'm also curious and disappointed that the Hanoverian brigades are hardly mentioned in their conspicuous Waterloo roles near Hougoumont fortress, in the allied center, and amidst Perponcher and Picton's Divisions on the Allied left wing.I can guarantee that in spite of my lengthy review, I've only just scratched the surface of the volumes of revealing exciting collected information that the author has compiled ever-so excellently. It is everything the book says on one of its opening pages;"This book fully examines the role of the almost-forgotten third of the Allied army [Wellington's army]."

I'm torn as to how to rate this...it held my attention reasonably well, I actually laughed out loud a coupla times, there were some original bits....but basically it really was deeply, aggressively, profoundly cornballish fluff. It's fairly fun fluff, but still. There were some cute bits --I love the Aeslin mice, who are deeply religious in that they have incredible memories for trivia & create high holy day celebrations to commemorate such things as "The Renewd Consciousness of the Arboreal Princess" (our heroine waking up), to things like "Okay Dad, I'll take out the garbage" (btw, I'm deeply disappointed in the Kindle "X-ray" function: it had entries for every major & minor character plus such terms as New York & Ace bandage, fa cryin' out loud, but not the mice).There were quite a few clever & fun things, a few surprises, and a lot of totally predictable things (gee, what'll happen when The Covenant hottie shows up.....).This book sorta reminds me of Laurell K Hamilton (back when she wrote books with plots, & things happened other than minutely detailed, squishy sex), if Laurell had sucked down wine coolers (or chain-toked joints) & worn a nitrous oxide mask while she wrote.If you're in the mood for corny, goofy, sometimes original, fluffy brain candy, you could do worse. However, my budget's tight enough that I'll only spring for the sequels if they go down to 2 bucks, or I get a windfall. Or I find an NO cylinder lying around.

Failure to get loose on your own could lead to missing dinner, or worse, being forced to admit that you missed dinner because your baby sister had tied you to the couch. Again.” ****But since her family is in hiding everything growing up served the purpose to teach her how to stay alive in the face of danger just in case she is ambushed by Cryprids or worse a member of the CovenantVerity is actually on a journey to find herself. Currently she is in New York on her own her family has given her a year to decide if she wants to follow in the family business and be a cryptozoologist or follow her other dream of being a professional dancer. But since she is in the city she might as well join in on the local Cryptid scene and learn some stuff right.This book was so much fun. Verity is full of sass and quippy attitudeWe don’t get much family interaction yet but you can already tell that they are going to be a riot. Not only are there quotes at the beginning at each chapter that are hilarious but the glimpses we get of Verity’s sister Antimony (see above quote about childhood and being tied up) and her Grandmother who apparently loves to visit hell.“Answer’s ‘no,’ Dave. What would my grandmother say?” Dave paused. “She out of Hell this week?” he asked warily.“Not until Solstice, but still. She wouldn’t understand.”He relaxed. “She’d understand that you needed to save your job.”“I think it’s a little more likely she’d understand that you can kill a bogeyman in a lot of different ways, and come riding in to avenge my honor.”I can’t wait to meet Grandma…she sounds awesome.Verity also has a cryptid cousin Sarah. They aren’t related by blood since Sarah is more like a Giant Wasp who looks like a human. Sarah is also a Mathematician and a telepath who can do some wacky things with your mind. But no worried she got her morals from Battlestar Galactica so I’m sure everyone around her will be fine.And did I mention the forbidden romance…Well I will mention it now then. A man from the Enemy a.k.a. the Covenant is in the city and Verity seems to have sparked his interest or vice versa. Dominic De Luca grew up an orphan in the Covenant and he was not expecting anything like Verity when he came to town. I’m starting to think that they may have been understating things.” “Oh?” I asked, interested despite myself. “What did they say? ” “That you were all insane.” “Ah.” I sat up again, grinning at him. “That’s pretty much true. We’re all crazy. But crazy has its benefits.” “What benefits are those?” he asked warily. “Crazy gets all the knives.”I liked that there is no instalove. It is all lusty and even though Verity knows she should maybe direct those lustful feelings anywhere than in Dominic’s direction he does have a great fighting form and who says a girl can’t take a walk on the wild side every once and awhile.But there is also a plot involving a snake cult and singe women disappearing in the city. It was so much fun that I really didn’t want it to be over and then when it was I was ready to jump into the next book right away.Did I say read this book? Because I don’t think my review did it justice and I’m pretty sure you should just READ THIS BOOK.

Being in publishing, I seldom review, and never books from my own publisher or any of my clients. I came across this book, most likely from a free BookBub or similar sale...and I love it.This is an exceptional urban fantasy, both in the story line and the complex world building. We have the Covenant, an ancient cryptid-hunting organization, and the splinter faction, the Price family. The Covenant is stuck in their crypti-cidal doctrine, but the Prices seek to maintain balance among humans and cryptids and are viewed as traitors by the Covenant. There are numerous races of cryptids, both sentient and non. The human-like cryptids live relatively normal lives, and McGuire gives us a lot of great characters with distinct personalities, voices, and species-specific abilities, characteristics, and weaknesses.But what I loved best was the humor. Verity is smart, sassy, and sarcastic. The family quotes at the start of each chapter are priceless (oops, accidental pun!) and the scene labels are witty and fun.I might've gotten this one for free, but I've fallen into the get-the-first-book-free trap and have already paid full price for book 2.
