This book focuses on maps by a Swedish priest/mapmaker named Olaus Magnus in 1539. His mission was to give the broadest ranging maps of his time and he succeeded. He also drew the mythological sea monsters that explorers and sailors reported seeing on their voyages. At one time the Catholic Archbishop of Upsalla, Sweden, Magnus was ousted by protestant reformers and he fled to Danzig. I loved this book because the drawings are excellent and the lore is fascinating, plus the maps are amazing. It gives us a view into the1530's, a time when explorers such as de Soto, Cardenas, Coronado, de Orellana and de Mota were actively exploring North America and Asia. Magnus was an important mapmaker who delineated the shape of the world as Europeans knew it at that time, and he also preserved the mythological beings who inhabited the imaginations of the sea voyagers.

An excellent piece of scholarship. Of particular value and usefulness: the dust jacket opens to a large scale reproduction of the only colored version of the original map.

While researching a book on Sea Monsters, Joseph Nigg's fantastic book, exploding with illustrations and photo artifacts was an exceptional resource. A great addition to any library leaning toward cryptozoological exploration.

This book is a wonderful step back in time with wonderful illustrations and painstaking attention to detail. It is a fascinating look at the totally different perceptions of the world and mindset from the 16th century all while navigating a map from that time: Enter a world of fantastical creatures which were considered real at the time.

This book is great. Fabulous illustrations all throughout and its packed with tons of information. If you like maps or seafaring folk lore this is a great resource.

A wonderful look at a wonderful map, well presented and discussed. The 1539 Carta Marina by Olaus Magnus is a magnificent work of art and cartography that deserves a book like this.

The lush illustrations in this book make it a great addition to any coffee table. It is a delight to page through slowly.

I’m hooked on the Legion of Angels series. I get to the end of the book and all I want is more, so I pick up the next available title.Dragon’s Storm is book four in the Legion of Angels series by Ella Summers.Their where a lot of great developments and surprises in Dragon’s Storm.Leda is currently at Storm Castle for training on the four elements; earth, air, fire, & water. Despite the fallout with Nero in the last book, he seeks Leda out for help on another mission to find one of the storm dragons who’s gone missing.These two fight and work well together. I like seeing them on missions and off. In Dragon’s Storm Leda is indecisive on having a relationship with an angel, Nero. Their is a lot of tension between them as they work together. She has to decide if she could accept Nero for who he is, a man and an angel. She also has to realize that she has always acted this way and that the powers she gains, don’t change the person she has become.We get a little more on the Guardians, but not much. We get to learn more on Nero’s mother and Leda’s brother Zane. Lots of surprise throughout this book and at the end we have BIG surprise that will shock.This series packs a punch. I love the action and romance. Like getting hit with surprises in each book, going on a mission, and gaining more powers. Urban Fantasy fans will enjoy!Rated: 4 Stars** You do need to read the books in order.

Leda is struggling to come to terms with her status. She wants to become an angel to gain the powers to help find and save her brother, but struggles with the stark contrast between humans and angels. Nero tries to find a way to let her adjust, but is also struggling to understand how anything can work between them if Leda can’t accept him as an angel herself.Leda was whiny in ways I wasn’t expecting. I wasn’t thrilled with her hypocritical views of angels and humans, but the ending more than made up for her drama llama conversations. She circled around somewhat, and I’m hoping Leda sees the light, so to speak , in the next book. The action was quick, but the conversations between Leda and Nero are probably some of my favorite bits. Her sass and his straight laced views are highly entertaining. Nero is even budging a teensy bit on the whole follow the rule thing...

This series just keeps getting better. I still spend a lot of time feeling like I'm skating over the top of a good story rather than immersing myself in it. Summers could really go into a lot more detail on training. She talks about the training and how hard it is, but for the most part, I don't feel it.That said, the world is great, the characters are amazing and Leda and Nero are great with each other. It may not cross the line into a great book, but it's fun, entertaining and overall a good read.I enjoyed the new scenery in this book and Leda's continue growth into who-knows-what. I liked seeing dark angels up close and personal. The plot overall had good pacing and was entertaining.

I said it before when reviewing book 1 in Legion Of Angel's Series, wow wow wow! Book 2, Book 3, Book 4, each book grabs you by the throat, holding your attention from beginning to end. I will not spoil the series by giving out details. Others will do that. If you love women who are strong of heart, mind, and soul..... Read this Series by Ella Summers. Humor, strength of characters, continuity of storyline, you will love her style. I sure do.

Awesome action, great twists, slight cliff-hanger ending, interesting dialogue and hot chemistry between Leda and Nero. All in all this book was definitely worth 5 stars in my opinion. In fact the whole series is worth 5 stars, the whole premise and take on the paranormal genre is so unique and interesting. Highly recommend!

Leda Nero Basanti Nyx Harker Nerissa Jace ... ALL the characters are wonderful. The premise of he Legion of Angels the Demons and the Guardians is right up my alley for paranormal romance. Just an exciting fun and emotive adventure, one I will follow with each new edition. Cannot wait for the 5th book. I am a fan!

The storyline is getting better and better with each book in this great Legion of Angels series. Leda and Nero are a perfect dream-team. I enjoy a series revolving around a strong female character with a crafty, streetwise way of handling her problems. The immortals call Leda Chaos/Pandira for a reason. My new Must Read series-- don't miss it!

When I saw Romeo & Juliet in the theatre -- on its opening weekend -- after the film in the lobby I saw dozens of teenaged girls sobbing in each other's arms. I've never seen anything like that before or since. That alone marks the film as a masterpiece, and nothing any critic can say is relevant next to that emotional reaction. Those sobbing teenagers are absolute proof that any critic who panned this film is a fool.Di'Caprio wasn't very famous at that point (though I believe he'd already been nominated for an oscar for an indy film). Later that night, I had dinner with friends and predicted that this boy would become the biggest star in Hollywood -- by tomorrow! I was off by a couple of years. Rare in film history has there been such a perfect casting -- Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo. The mythical balcony scene is freshly designed and executed wonderfully, bringing the myth to life before our eyes. But the crowning glory and superpower of this film is the 'love at first sight' scene - ironic in that there are no words spoken (words being Shakespeare's superpower). It's all done with the eyes by the two young genius actors, combined with inspired camera work and the devastating vocal performance of Des'ree. This is one of the most beautiful, greatest, and most powerful scenes in cinematic history.What is this emotion -- love at first sight? It might only happen two or three times in our entire lives. It isn't real love. So is it just trivial, adolescent silliness? I think it is much more than that -- and so did Shakespeare. What is our emotional relationship with our desires that can never be? We're haunted forever by the impossiblity of perfect love as much as we were ever thrilled by the fantasy of it. Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo & Juliet' taps deeply into the impossible longings that never leave us. It is a masterpiece.

As an English teacher, teaching Shakespeare can be quite a challenge. For modern students, trying to connect the concepts, theme, and setting of Romeo and Juliet can be quite a challenge. Keeping them engaged in the struggle of Shakespearean language is even more so. This version of the play is accurate and most importantly, entertaining. We, as a class, will read a portion of the play and then I will show this film to help cement ideas, dialogue, and characters. The students love the film, laugh, and respond better to the play than without!

I did not want to see this movie for years after its release. I consider myself a purist where the Bard of Avon is concerned. I adored the films Henry V & Much Ado About Nothing, both directed and starring Kenneth Branaugh, Richard III starring and directed by Olivier. Period costumes, true to Shakespeare's lines, etc. I began to change when I realized (fairly early on in watching it) that 10 Things I Hate About You, was a delightful retelling of The Taming Of The Shrew. Eventually I watched this and found a gem. From the factions portrayed as rival gangs, to the outstanding delivery of the lines. The true crowning jewel is the over the top performance by the inimitable John Leguizamo. As Tibalt, John is amazing.

I really love this book. It made understanding a lot easier for my students. ~BUT~ I will say that some parts are a little much. It seems the translator looks for the most vulgar way to word some of Shakespeare's crude jokes (Shakespeare is crude, to be sure--and some of it is quite funny. However, sometimes the translator goes too far the other way). Plus, there were parts that weren't necessarily as sexual in the original as it was presented in the translated version (like scenes that were purposely left ambiguous so that it might have been interpreted in more than one way). This actually took away from the cleverness and thoughtfulness of some of Shakespeare's jokes.Because of this, I had to pre-read all the scenes to choose which scenes we read in this book, and which ones we read from the original text (from the textbook, where students couldn't read the translation). I did find, however, that the classes that used BOTH original and translated readings for the unit had an easier time understanding the original text when challenged to do so (likely because they didn't feel as overwhelmed from days of old text).This is a very useful tool for the classroom. Both versions are important--and, truthfully, some of my students preferred the original text, and some preferred the new text, so switching between the two for certain scenes was a great exercise.

This is such a great reimagining of the Shakespearean play. My students love this version and it keeps their attention with the fast-paced plot, colorful scenes, and flashy costumes. However, this edition is the NEW Music edition of the DVD, so there are added bonuses to this new disc. The music edition features a 45 minute documentary of how they picked the songs that were used in the movie. Twenty years after this film came out, my students are still singing along with some of the songs--they were the perfect choices and were timeless songs (and hey, if my students know Prince's "When the Doves Cry" more than 30 years after the song's initial release, yes, it is timeless).My DVD did not look like the photo (the cover is a bit different, although it does say "Music Edition") but I bought it for the movie and not for the cover. If you are a fan of this version of the movie and you don't have the music edition, you need this one. If you're just a Romeo and Juliet fan and have (gasp!) never seen this 1996 version, go ahead and take a chance. You'll love it.
