Good brief history of western music. A comparative mention of developments of musical instruments, notable inventions, some cultural impacts and developments in the eastern part of the world could have enhanced the quality of this book and would fit the title more appropriately. Sorry to say that the description of such developments in the west was also not balanced.

Tough read unbelievably detailed —-to the point of pain. Brilliant in many parts. Almost totally ignores the swing era and modern “straight ahead” jazz.

There is so much I did not know about Music history. Check out his Spotify playlist to get samples of the music he talks about.

Let it first be clear that one of Mr Goodall's clipped toenails has more musical talent than all of me at my peak. Which makes me wonder how I can possibly pass judgment on anything he does. The second point is that this book is a companion to his 6-hour BBC series “The Story of Music.” I thought the series even better than the book, especially the episodes from 1650 forward, but at this writing, I can't find the series for sale anywhere, not at Amazon, not even at BBC.com. It's on YouTube in its entirety, but unlikely that will last forever. In this book, Goodall combines scholarship with his musical gifts, and his thoughts are often delightfully expressed. The book was enjoyable and educational from first page to last. But if I could sit down with the author, I’d ask him "Why didn’t you spend more time telling us ..."-- How rock merged with folk to become so integral to the 1960s. (Civil rights, Vietnam War, women’s liberation, drugs, rebellion against parental controls ….)-- Why bebop, which is for me unlistenable, didn't sink into instant obscurity.-- Why rap/hiphop, again for me unlistenable, has become so inexplicably popular.-- Why Aram Khatchaturian isn’t mentioned once, with the Spartacus and Gayane ballets having some of the most luscious melodies and orchestrations in the entire history of music.-- Why or how western classical music has spread throughout the world. (I'll never forget a concert by an excellent Inchon Symphony Orchestra in Seoul in 1989, every musician Korean, and the performance exceptional.)I can’t argue with Mr Goodall’s giving Stevie Wonder so many pages and so much praise, for Goodall’s the expert musician and I’m certainly not. I’ll just say SW isn't represented by a single CD in my large collection, and I can think of many other musicians more influential, certainly more enjoyable.Likewise with Mr Goodall’s respect for Cuban music that I don't understand, even knowing Goodall and Ry Cooder love it so.And his granting Steve Reich so much importance, which I’d give to his contemporary, the more accessible Philip Glass.Enough negatives. What I did like about the book is how it helped me understand music evolving over time, and how some musicians fit their times and then influenced others. I’ve long loved Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven; I now better understand them and their place in music.I also enjoyed Goodall's observations, as for example, "Vast swathes of the music written in the sixty or so years after 1750 slavishly hung on these three master chords -- the same three, as it happens, that dominate rock and roll and its various twentieth-century offspring."Another: "Musicians and poets [of the Romantic period] saw the countryside as a roughly hewn wilderness, supplying countless images to convey the swirling emotional torrents of the yearning lover. Of course, none of them actually had to WORK the land. You observed peasants from the comfortable distance of your artistic nook but you wouldn't want to be one. They were more like present-day privileged Western students trawling the developing world and writing blogs about how the world's poorest people enabled them to broaden their horizons."Or: "Listening to Faure after Brahms, Liszt, Wagner or Tchaikovsky is comparable to someone spring-cleaning and redecorating a teenage boy's bedroom. Gone are the posters of death, psychological torment, superheroes and tragedy. The augmented piles of clothes have been put away, and the windows have been opened to dispel the diminished air."Or: "...the RITE OF SPRING is the twentieth century's most thrillingly explosive, iconic piece of orchestral music; it is still astonishing a hundred years later. It is a rebellion in sound. While Mahler had layered melody on melody, tangled together like a twisted knot [aha, now I see better why I don't enjoy him], and Debussy had manipulated blocks of adjacent sound melting into each other, Stravinsky went one step further, superimposing simultaneous rhythms on top of each other."We may not always agree with Mr Goodall's musical opinions, but no denying the pleasure reading them.I hesitate to post this “review” and display my ignorance for all to see. I offer it to those, amateurs like me, hoping to gain a broader view of music. You will not go wrong reading this book. I just wish the author had talked with me as he was writing it. (Ha!)

Read it from cover to cover, now re-reading it and researching the composers, eras and pieces he sites in the book. A wonderful presentation of multiple eras of music-

A thought-provoking, insightful overview of the pageant of classical music's unfolding. One of the most engaging accounts I've read in recent times.

I learned so much from this book and have a newfound understanding and respect for anyone who dedicates their career to music. Having said that, a more apt title for this book, however, might be "the story of WESTERN music" because that was most of the book covered. Definitely worthwhile, though!

I bought this based on an interview I saw with the author on the Daily show I believe. Mr. Goodall made the book sound very interesting and as the title states, connected the dots so to speak between a wide and vast subject. but he lied to me. This book is a history of "classical" music. He only discusses contemporary musical genres such as Rock or Jazz as they pertain in example to prove a point about the broader history of his main musical focus European "classical" music. there was virtually no discussion of African, Aboriginal Australian or pre colonial American music, and only brief snippets of Asian music forms. The last chapter is really the only place the reader gets contemporary insight/info. It's not an easy read if you are looking for anything other than educational material, but Mr. Goodall does write passionately about his subject matter and I did learn from him. I think the book needs a more accurate title, but if you want to know about the topic of "classical" music, this is an excellent resource.

I was a huge Marvel Comics fan growing up in the 1970s and I continued collecting into the 2000s. I thought MARVEL, ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW..... would be a fun trip down memory lane but I was amazed how much comic characters have changed. Don Blake's nurse, Jane Forster is Thor and the Falcon is now Captain America, and that is just the beginning. This book contains 235 pages jammed packed with tons of trivia, fun facts and illustrations of all of the heroes. The layout, like all of DK books, is fun, colorful and kinetic - I have included a few sample pages in the photo section so you can get the flavor. One last thing, this book is written with the perspective that these superhero characters are real so there isn't any info about creators, artists and writers.

This book is a good primer for anyone looking to get into (or back into) the Marvel Universe. It contains a lot of interesting facts and good summaries of many major characters and events, but some others are noticeably absent. For starters the book as a whole is very light on X-Men content, with only a single two-page spread devoted to the entire team, which has had many revisions over the years. Major characters like Storm, Kitty Pride, Psylocke, and Bishop are hardly mentioned aside from in a laundry list of members (if at all), and iconic villains like Magneto, Apocalypse, and Juggernaut are relegated to single-sentence summaries. Most of the other Marvel properties get better treatment, except for their other dream team, the Fantastic Four. Being just a group of four, two pages was probably enough for the heroes, but some of the major villains they've spawned were omitted almost entirely. Galactus gets a minor reference, but it's Dr. Doom who is seriously snubbed (no dedicated villain page for either). It's a shame to see such little content devoted to the original Marvel super villain who would form the archetype for all others to come. Finally, the events section is pretty light as well; the 2015 Secret Wars remake is listed but the '80s classic is ignored. The same goes for the Contest of Champions and Age of Apocalypse, and likewise for more recent major events and alternate universes like "House of M" and its aftermath in Avengers vs. X-Men.So overall, there's a decent amount of content and it's well presented, but I feel like the book could have standed to be another 20 or so pages and include some of these more glaring omissions.

This is a beautiful book with a lot of information for the Marvel fan. The illustrations are superb and and the writing is engaging and really interesting. It give a lot of information that even the super fan may have missed. Love it!

It doesn't give "EVERYTHING," but it is full of fun knowledge. I learned a lot about Marvel superheroes that I didn't already know. For an in-depth encyclopedia of every Marvel character, you should look into the Marvel Encyclopedia: Updated and Expanded. Still, this book is full of great art, and is really fun to read through. Recommended for anyone who wants to collect Marvel comics, or who wants a fun guide of the Marvel universe.

OMG yessssss. Such amazing information and beautiful pages. There are lots of characters and great surprise throwback people you may have forgotten about. A perfect gift for any Marvel fan.

This was a gift for a friend's 9 year old son. He loves it and often carries it around with him. Not too mature, not too babyish. Great purchase.

I got it for my wife because she ask me a lot of questions about Marvel.

Got this for my Marvel nerd son! He loves it and now knows everything about Marvel. My husband likes to read it too! Very durable and nice. Sturdy hard cover.

Review

"For those with a taste for mathematical elegance and an interest in the full array of approaches available for modeling populations with complex life cycles, this book is a must."--Larry Barnthouse, SETAC Globe"Both the scope of issues and the means by which they are exposed show the author's desire to create a book that might be interesting and useful not only for the beginner, but for the expert too. Hal Caswell has succeeded remarkably in doing both."--Dmitrii O. Logofet, Ecological Modelling"To say that the extent of material covered in this book is impressive is an understatement. If your research endeavors include population biology, or you teach a course in population biology, you need this text."--Floyd W. Weckerly, Natural Resource Modeling

This classic book is a must-have for anyone looking to do research into population dynamics. While extremely heavy on the mathematics from the very beginning, it is presented in such a way as to make the maths accessible to those who are willing to put in the effort to understand them. While other books may present the models in a more simplified form with fewer maths, this book is key if you really want to understand how to assess population dynamics using matrices.

In summary, these are the main points:Mathematical representation of survivorship and maternityVital rates of a life cycleExcellent real-life examples of applicationThe construction of matrix population models to describe the progression of biological events using abstract variablesData linkage to matrix population modelsStochasticity as an introductory component of matrix modelsThis book, coupled with the discovery of the human genome, provides a fascinating conceptual framework for the analysis of human behavior across sexual reproduction. The main focus is mathematical modeling of organisms across time including parameter matrices and gradient matrices. The intrinsic difficulty, the discussion of which is the central feature of the book, is the discontinuity of change across a projection model.

Covers everything I needed to know in Matrix population biology! Used it primarily for class but now sits on my shelf as a reference

All great! Received on time

We completed the Alta Via I trek, relying primarily on this book's Alta Via I directions and on online maps we downloaded independently. The book was helpful for getting a sense of the general route. However, if you've used the Tour du Mont Blanc guide by the same publisher (Cicerone), you might be surprised by how much less detailed the trek information is in this book. The TMB guide had detailed trail directions, with all elevation gains and losses, and it listed, mapped or described all forks and intersections. In the Dolomites book many intersections were simply not listed or described. I think that the book would benefit substantially from mapping the trails that intersect with the AV route. If we had not had supplemental trail maps, it would have been impossible to follow the book's directions. The elevation information provided was also misleading. For example, one of the Alta Via sections was described as a "very easygoing day," and based on the various elevations provided along the route, one would infer only gross total elevation gains/losses of about 50-100m. However, the gross elevation changes that day were about 1400m (700m up and back down again) that day -- not impossible, but hardly "easygoing." We found that hiking time estimates were also quite inconsistent. If you used and loved the TMB guide published by Cicerone, don't expect the same from the Dolomites guide.

My wife and I used this Exceptional book to hike the Alta Via 1 route across the Dolomites in August, 2013. We did not buy or need any additional maps or books. Gillian Price provides enough information information to plan your route ahead of time and to easily find the trail each day without taking away the discovery and adventure by giving too much detail. As the book mentions, you will need to bring cash (in Euro) to pay for food and lodging at the Rifugios (huts). If you need to exchange money, the best exchange rate in Italy (by far) is at the post office. We saved over a hundred Euro by exchanging U.S. dollars at the main post office in Venice (ask your hotel for directions). The following update might help hikers who want to do the via ferrata variant described at the end of Alta Via 1 but do not want to carry a climbing harness for eight days. The author mentions that the alpine guide at Refugio 7 Alpini can provide via ferrata kit and expert accompaniment. That guide is no longer working. However, you can rent via ferrata kit from the alpine guide at Refugio San Sebastiano (passed in Stage 9) and drop it off at the end of the trip in Belluno. If you are trying to decide whether to hike in the Dolomites, we highly recommend them. We have backpacked around the world (including impressive ranges in the Rockies, Sierras, Patagonia, Bolivia, Russia, and Central Asia) and we found the Dolomites to repeatedly offer some of the most spectacular vistas we have seen.

I am in the midst of planning a trek along Alta Via 2. I agonized briefly over what book to buy, and ended up landing on Trekking in the Dolomites. I have certainly not been disappointed. The information in the book is very helpful. There have been some inaccuracies with regard to the open/close dates for some of the Rifugios, and I have spent a good deal of time online making more detailed plans, but the book has been invaluable to me.A few details:The maps that are provided are ample for low-level planning, but I suspect some additional, larger maps will be needed to accurately navigate the trails. The book is not particularly great about letting you know about some important details: do you need to arrive by a certain time for meals to be served (some rifugio require this, others don't)? Is water available along the trail? There are frequent callouts in the book, but they don't seem to call out the components of the hike that are most important to a traveler. You need to read through each of the "chapters" to get the details necessary for planning. This is absolutely a helpful resource, but there are a few drawbacks. I recommend visiting some websites in conjunction with the book when planning your trip. I am going in early October and will certainly update my review if there are any other significant discrepancies. Nevertheless, if you are trekking AV, you should probably buy this now.

The book is nicely written but the level of details given for each stage and description of the trek is lacing. I was missing details on long/hard climes, long descents, boulders and ferratas. In addition some pointers on places the trek is not well shown would have helped. I was expecting something in the line of an older book from trailblazer I have use in the passed when walking in the dolomites.

Good review of the most common routes in the Dolomites that tend to be crowded. Other routes are out there with a little internet research. Plan ahead, the Refugios book up early. But some stunning country though don't expect a USA style back-country experience though.

Using this guidebook for the whole AV2 route makes clear that it's pretty good. The advice on alternate routes was particularly welcome. You really see its value when you head into an area with less information available. The maps are so-so; that is unfortunately the usual for Ciccerone.

Convenient backpack size. Appears to be a useful guide, but I have to actually use it on the trail to determine accuracy and adequacy. Nice photos. No topographic maps, only schematics. For the price, I would have preferred that it included some actual topos. No GPS coordinates. No leg-to-leg breakdown of distances.

Trails are for climbing and heavy duty trekking. If you are walking or regular hiking, buy the walking book.
