I love Lisa's work, if you haven't seen her Vblog on you tube, if you can't afford therapy, I highly recommend it! It has changed my life! It is still changing my life! Lisa has a very empathetic and personable way of communicating to her audience, but her greatest gift is showing you exactly how to overcome the obstacles of your programming. She not only explains to you how your mind works against you, but gives you tools that address all the symptoms of co-dependency. Best of all she has done her own recovery work. She knows what she is talking about, not as distant observer but as a survivor of her own childhood programming. She has given me a lot of hope in very dark times, and I can't wait to see how much more I will learn from her. It will take time and dedication to sit down and do some of the exercises she suggests. Looking forward to healing. I am 53 years old and only recently discovered that my abusive EX and mother are pathological narcissists. I am definitely a codependent as a result of life long narcissistic abuse and now it’s is time to embrace healing. In 2012 my only sibling and loving brother ended his life by suicide. This book is the equivalent of going into my head and unscrewing and taking all the things I have desperately tried to get my fiance (who comes from a relatively healthy family) to understand - and then putting them both on the table and saying how to get over them. Even the language I have used in trying to combat dysfunctional behavior is in this book - Like desperately wanting to be "seen." And not living in the present, because of this one. I have read a lot of books, I have gone to alot of, and have tried alot of therapist, by far this is one of best resources I have come across. The commandments are worth the price alone.

I am currently in Lisa's 12 week program and this is an excellent work book to use with the course. Even if I weren't in the course, this book would be an excellent resource and life saver for anyone who is currently codependent. The tools and information are invaluable! One of my best purchases in my life.

Lizzie Borden 1 MURDER COMES TO FALL RIVER Ready for his day, Andrew J. Borden left his house around nine a.m. and headed to the business district of ?Fall River, Massachusetts, a city he had called home his entire life. He had taken this morning stroll for years. He had no idea that this would be the last time he’d do it. The Borden name was well known in this manufacturing city along the Quequechan River. Andrew’s ancestor Richard Borden had settled in Rhode Island during the 1630s, and other relatives then moved into nearby Fall River. Some of the Bordens became important business owners and leaders of the community. One distant relative of Andrew’s was president of the Fall River Railroad, while another ran the local ironworks. Those Bordens and their closest family members were some of the richest people in town. Andrew, though, came from a much simpler background. He had trained as a carpenter before going into the furniture business. Over the years, he became a successful businessman and investor. One local resident described him as “just and honest” but also “hard, stern, and puritanical.”?1 Despite making plenty of money from his business dealings, Borden didn’t like to spend it. It was said that Borden boasted he had never foolishly spent a single dollar. Even with his success, he chose to live with his family on Second Street rather than in the neighborhood known as the Hill, the most fashionable part of the city. Still, the Borden home was comfortable, and the family’s neighbors included doctors and other professionals. Borden saw no need to show off his wealth by moving to a larger, fancier home. Besides, living at 92 Second Street gave him an easy walk into town. When Borden set out on the morning of ?Thursday, August 4, 1892, he wasn’t feeling so well. Two days earlier he had come down with an upset stomach, most likely from a case of food poisoning. The family had eaten some leftovers that had gone bad in the summer humidity. This day was already starting out as another muggy one. As he ran his errands, Borden passed a building he owned that had his name prominently displayed on the front. He then stopped in briefly at the National Union Bank, where he was president. He continued on to the post office before heading to another bank; for that one, he served on the board of directors. Going to the banks to deposit a check or carry out some other business was almost a daily ritual for Borden. He also stopped to chat with people on the street. That day he talked with Jonathan Clegg, a store owner who rented space from him. Borden also went to one of his properties where workmen were making repairs. But at least one person Borden met that day noticed that the businessman was still under the weather. The lingering queasiness in his stomach may have led Borden to cut short his daily rounds and head back home. Andrew Borden lived with his wife, Abby, and his adult daughters, Emma and Lizzie, the children from his first marriage. The family had had a houseguest the night of August 3: John Morse, Mr. Borden’s brother-in-law from his first marriage. Morse and Borden often talked business. That morning the two men and Mrs. Borden had breakfast together; then Morse left the house shortly before Borden, though he expected to return for dinner. Emma was away visiting friends, so just Lizzie, Mrs. Borden, and the housekeeper, Bridget, were home when Mr. Borden returned. THE FIRST BLOODY BODY HE WENT FIRST to the side door and, finding it locked, went next to the front door. That door was locked too, and he fumbled a bit with his keys. Inside, Bridget heard him at the door and came over to let him in. She was surprised to find it locked and let out a little cry of frustration as she tried to open it. Lizzie was upstairs at the time, by the front stairs, and she laughed as she heard Bridget’s troubles with the door. Lizzie soon came down to greet her father. He sat in the dining room, reading, and she asked if he had any mail for her. He said no. Then Lizzie told her father that Mrs. Borden was not home after all. Someone had come to the door earlier in the morning with a note that asked Abby to go visit a sick friend. As she did her chores, Bridget saw Mr. Borden walking through the house before he finally settled down in the sitting room to read the newspaper. In the dining room, Lizzie had set up an ironing board to iron handkerchiefs—one household task she always did herself. Thanks to her father’s money, Lizzie didn’t have to work. She could sleep late, as she had that morning, and generally avoid doing much housework. Cleaning their own rooms was about all Lizzie and her sister regularly did. Taking a break from her ironing, Lizzie went into the kitchen and mentioned to Bridget that Mrs. Borden had gone out. Then the two young women discussed a sale at a local store. By now, Mr. Borden had stretched out his tall, thin body on the sofa in the sitting room. When Lizzie saw him, he had stopped reading and was simply resting. Lizzie then went outside for a few minutes. Meanwhile, Bridget went upstairs to take a break from her chores. She heard a bell ringing in the distance at city hall, signaling that it was eleven o’clock. A few minutes later Bridget heard Lizzie yelling her name from downstairs, saying, “Come down quick. Father’s dead. Somebody came in and killed him.”?2 Later, though, Lizzie said that in that moment, she wasn’t sure whether he was dead, but she was “so frightened and horrified” ?by what she saw.?3 Bridget rushed down the stairs and found Lizzie standing by the bloody body of Andrew Borden. But he was not merely bloody—his head and face had been hacked with an ax, leaving a hole in his skull and deep cuts that had splattered the walls with blood. One eyeball had been sliced in half. “Go for Dr. Bowen,” Lizzie ordered, and Bridget ran out to get the doctor, who lived across the street.?4 As Bridget dashed across the street to look for Dr. Bowen, Adelaide Churchill was returning from grocery shopping. She lived next to the Bordens. She saw Bridget leave the doctor’s house alone and head back home. The neighbor noticed the housekeeper’s frightened look. Churchill then went inside to put away her groceries. Looking through a window, she saw Lizzie outside by the side door. She, too, looked frightened or upset. Opening the window, Churchill asked Lizzie if something was wrong. Lizzie replied, “Oh, Mrs. Churchill, do come over; somebody has killed father.”?5 Churchill quickly ran over. Bridget was gone again, as Lizzie had sent her to get Alice Russell, one of her friends. Churchill arrived to see Lizzie sitting on a step of the house’s back stairs. She explained that she had been in the barn, heard a noise, and come into the house to find her father’s mutilated body. Churchill asked where Mrs. Borden was, and Lizzie said, “I don’t know where Mrs. Borden is. I think she is out, but I wish you would look.”?6 Lizzie explained again about the note Abby Borden had received that morning, and while she assumed her stepmother had gone out, she didn’t know for sure if she had returned. Lizzie said she might have heard her come in. If Abby had returned, she might have suffered the same bloody fate as Mr. Borden. ANOTHER GRUESOME DISCOVERY SINCE DR. BOWEN wasn’t home, Lizzie asked Churchill to go search for another doctor. The neighbor headed out, leaving Lizzie alone at the crime scene, but not for long. Dr. Bowen came home and his wife told him about trouble at the Borden residence. He went over and found Lizzie in the hall. By then, both Bridget and Churchill had returned. Lizzie explained that her father had been killed. Bowen asked if she had seen anyone, and Lizzie said no. After Bowen announced that Mr. Borden was indeed dead, Lizzie asked him to send a telegraph to her sister Emma to tell her what had happened. While the doctor was away, Lizzie once again said that Mrs. Borden could be in the house too. Bridget and Churchill went upstairs—Bridget refused to go alone—and the two made a gruesome discovery in the guest bedroom. Even before they reached the top of the stairs, they could see a body lying under the bed. Without looking any further, Churchill was sure it was the dead body of Abby Borden, and she hurried back down the stairs, filled with fear. As a local newspaper later reported the scene, Abby “had died evidently where she had been struck, for her life blood formed a ghastly clot on the carpet.”?7 Fall River police soon arrived at the home, and as the day went on, Lizzie answered a barrage of questions from the officers investigating the crime. Her friend Alice Russell was there for much of the time, and the two women presented very different images. Officer Philip Harrington wrote in his notes that Russell was “very pale, and much agitated, which she showed by short sharp breathing and wringing her hands.” Lizzie, on the other hand, “talked in the most calm and collected manner; her whole bearing was most remarkable under the circumstances.” At one point, Harrington offered to wait till the next day to question Lizzie further, when she might be less upset. Lizzie replied, “No, I can tell you all I know now just as well as any other time.” The exchange with Lizzie did not sit well with Harrington. As he wrote in his notes, “I don’t like that girl.”?8 By nightfall, Second Street was still crowded with local people seeking more information about the horrible crime. Newspapers in and around Fall River reported what little was known at the time, including rumors that a Portuguese man who worked on a farm Andrew Borden owned was a suspect. The Boston Advertiser played up the gory nature of the murders, reporting that the Bordens’ heads were “chopped to pieces by repeated and fiendish blows with an axe.” The paper wrote that some twelve hours after the bodies were first discovered, “the police and the people are in just as utter ignorance as they were when it was first noised abroad this noon.”?9 Within a few days, however, the police had a suspect in the grisly murders: Lizzie Borden. Her parents’ murders and then her trial captivated the country. Some people couldn’t imagine that a young woman from a wealthy and respectable family could commit such a crime. Others, though, saw Lizzie as cool and calculating—and able to kill in cold blood. Here is her story. THE FAMOUS RHYME More than 120 years after the murder of Andrew and Abby Borden, the most some people know about the case comes from a simple rhyme: Lizzie Borden took an axe And gave her mother forty whacks, When she saw what she had done, She gave her father forty-one. The little poem has been called a nursery rhyme and a jump-rope song, and it seems children began reciting it not long after the crime. The rhyme, though, is not historically accurate, as the killer used only twenty-nine blows of the murder weapon, not the eighty-one mentioned. The rhyme has had several variations, as explained by Olive Woolley Burt in her 1958 book, American Murder Ballads. In one version, after Lizzie delivered the first forty whacks, she “stood behind the door, and gave her father forty more.” Another version goes: Andrew Borden, he is dead; Lizzie hit him on the head. Lizzie killed her mother, too— What a horrid thing for Liz to do!??10

The first reviewer (one star) took a lot of time to discredit the accuracy of this book. I don't think "Ladyhawk" is really speaking to David Wallace-Wells's argument fairly. The future is, to say the least, uncertain, but can be understood to evolve within the bounds of wide extremes, each with a different probability. For instance, an as-yet-unknown technology might appear tomorrow that will solve or diminish the problem (a point the author makes repeatedly within the first chapter). Almost impossible, but possible. I think his point is , given the overwhelming consensus that human-caused carbon emissions (and other emissions that feedback loops will produce) is massively life-threatening to our children and grandchildren, we can't afford to wait for certainty. And so he's assembled facts from many credible sources to bolster his argument that we're in trouble.A couple of such facts that struck me were these: of the total quantity of intentional carbon burning that has occurred over the last 400 years, over half has happened since the premier of Seinfeld. 85% has occurred since the END of WWII. The compounding of global growth has resulted in enormous momentum for continued carbon burning.I don't understand why there is so much heat in the arguments of Ladyhawk and like-minded critics of those who raise this issue. I won't speculate on its sources. But I'd simply invite potential readers of this book to consider that when the greatest human-caused loss of life in human history -- World War II -- began, no one accurately predicted how it would go; how much the lives of people who lived within its theaters of operations would be changed (or abbreviated). That is one of the points that David Wallace-Wells invites readers to consider: that this WILL be worse than we think, because many are oblivious, or have a self-interest in the status quo, or maintain an optimism that will probably prove to be misplaced.Amazon lets you read the first few pages. About half of The Uninhabitable Earth is dedicated to presenting the latest research findings on the expected effects of climate change over the 21st century, with chapters on a wide range of topics including wildfires, economic collapse, and climate conflict. It is extremely well-researched—the author consulted many top climate scientists, there are copious citations and the notes section comprises a large portion of the book—yet presented in an accessible style. As in the original New York magazine article of which this is a book-length treatment, the effects of temperature increases of more than 2 degrees are covered in-depth, going up to about 6 degrees.The other half contains the author’s very literate and thought-provoking musings on the impact climate chaos is likely to have on fundamental structures such as capitalism, ethics, and our conception of history. I was impressed by the author’s restraint in not indulging in speculation. His points are well-informed and backed up with solid reasoning.The information contained in this book is extremely important, because it sounds the alarm at a time when immediate action must be taken, because it forces one to question so many fundamental assumptions behind contemporary life in a developed country, because it is founded in rigorous research on a topic that is of overwhelming significance. It raises and grapples with very big and pressing questions that will be seared onto the minds of millions over the coming century and beyond.

This is truly the most important book I have ever read, and one of the best written. It is so good, so complete, and so well-organized and argued that I immediately stopped writing my new book on the same subject, The Anthropogenic Apocalypse, after having worked on it for a year, because there is just no way that I, or any author, could outdo David Wallace-Wallace, or even come close. He has done a gigantic amount of solid research from a wide variety of sources, made the results frighteningly clear, and organized his science-based conclusions it into a horrifying, but probably accurate, depiction of the most horrendous catastrophes that wiil wreak havoc and death on the earth if the people and nations of our pale blue dot do not immediately undertake major serious programs to halt global warming – if it is not already too late. I will happily return to finishing my memoir of the sexual revolution and cheer as The Uninhabitable Earth heads to the top the charts. About the Author

Milton Friedman (1912–2006) was an economist who taught at the University of Chicago for more than three decades. He was a recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, and is known for his research on consumption analysis, monetary history and theory, and the complexity of stabilization policy. He was a principal founder of what has come to be known as the Chicago School of Economics. He was a well-known public champion of laissez-faire capitalism. In 1962 the University of Chicago Press published Capitalism and Freedom, one of the most influential books of the twentieth century. In 1998 the Press published Two Lucky People, the memoir by Milton and Rose Friedman of their joint lives and work. In reviewing the book in the New York Times Book Review, David Brooks wrote: “This is a book that restores your faith in reasoned discourse.… There really are people who believe in scholarly exchange as a way to discover truth.”

Although he never uses the term, Milton Friedman would probably be considered a libertarian with his view of a very limited Federal government. The main responsibilities of the Fed would be establishment and enforcement of laws, resolving property rights and maintaining the monetary system. Mr. Friedman considers himself a defender of `classical' liberalism which is essentially the liberalism of the 17th century that concerned itself with the distribution of power, protection of property rights and freedom of individuals.As the heir apparent to Fredrick A. Hayek, Mr. Friedman takes up the battle against socialism, central planning and the concentration of power. Unlike his predecessor, however, Milton Friedman is extremely specific about the changes he would like to see in the way the U.S. government governs. He would like to see the elimination of rent control, minimum wage, the FCC, Social Security, most business regulations, tariffs on imports, public housing and national parks. Friedman was also an early proponent of school vouchers. In fact he goes so far as to call for the complete `denationalization' (privatization) of public education. The main thrust of Mr. Friedman's argument is that when the government attempts to solve social problems through central planning it invariably causes more problems than it solves, restricts individual freedoms and consolidating power in central planners.There is an almost mystical reverence in this book for market forces and their ability, if left alone, to solve practically any social ill including racism. The problem is that Friedman presupposes that business will be forced to act in a rational and benevolent manner in order to maximize profits and survive in a competitive marketplace. Unfortunately this is often not the case. Businesses in the south were more than willing to forgo money offered by blacks. As a pro-business liberal Mr. Friedman sees regulations that force shops to hire blacks as unfair and damaging to those businesses that "[serve] a neighborhood inhabited by people who have a strong aversion to being waited on by a Negro clerk". However, Mr. Friedman's argument can be turned around as unfair and anti-capitalistic to blacks who offer their services and are denied based on race. This would apply to anyone barred from the marketplace, not just blacks.Milton Friedman is so pro-business that he advocates a complete elimination of corporate taxes. In his mind business owes nothing to society and even says, "there is one and only one social responsibility of business - to use its resources and engage in activities to increase its profits". He then goes even further stating that, "Few trends could so thoroughly undermine the very foundation of our free society as the acceptance by corporate officials of a social responsibility other than to make as much money for their stockholders as possible". Not only does Friedman encourage unbridled greed he makes it the number one corporate responsibility in order to protect "free society". Once a person accepts that the relentless pursuit of self interest is the best thing a person can do for society he or she can justify just about anything.One part of the book that seems particularly dated is Friedman's claim that Capitalism reduces wealth disparity. In fact he holds up the United States as a model for wealth equality. If only this were true. He completely ignores the real and growing threat to freedom brought on by the concentration of wealth because he doesn't see it as a problem. The average voting age citizen is welcome to vote for whichever party they choose at which point the parties in power will adjust policy to the needs of wealthy donors. The Bush administration has turned this it into an art form. Friedman also expresses concern that, "a large fraction of the public scrimps in their productive years to provide themselves with a higher standard of living in old age than they ever enjoyed in the prime of life". Mr. Friedman should be pleased to know that 40+ years after the books publication a large percentage of American's have more debt than assets.

This early work of Friedman (and famously his wife, Rose) is a seminal book and tutorial about the uniqueness of capitalism, and how that contrast with competing economic models. I think Friedman's writing lacks the punch and humor of his later, more mature work. But for anyone seeking a quick and tidy insight, and a general understanding of why freedom contributes to, rather than detracts from, liberty, this is the place to start. In an era when, wealth redistribution, tax the rich rhetoric, supply side hyperbole, and embraced deficits, are in vogue, Freidman tosses the baby out with the bath water, in arguing that the only responsibility of a person in a capitalist society is to earn as much as his thoughts and energies will allow. And in so doing improve the lot of all. He also argues rather brilliantly, that underclasses who come to embrace entitlements instead of opportunity are selling them selves and society short, as settling for a handout is nothing compared to the rewards and example, of rising on one's merit. Finally he demonstrates how collectivist society's come to be riddled with inefficiency, plagued by corruption and leveraged towards elite's at the expense of individuality, and the right to live as one see's fit.

A surprisingly in-depth look (for such a short book) at various market factors that capitalism affects and is affected by. I didn't expect to find any justifications for ANY government intervention in the market, but Friedman spells out many situations that he feels it would be justified, how it would affect the situation and what the alternatives would be. On the whole, this is an expertly written treatise on free market economics, or as free as rationally viable (given the political climate of the time).

This is an old text, written in the 60’s, and a lot has since changed and therefore some is out of date. Regardless, there are many good points. i.e. corporate tax reduction, part of the suggested licensing changes, some on market intervention. But holistically this book espouses laissez faire economics and close to a 100% and unregulated free market. It certainly makes you think, but accepting it holistically would be catastrophic and ridiculous. Reading it today provides a great economic history lesson, tremendous food for thought and many good ideas, some of which should be implemented.. This is highly recommended reading!

A rational and well thought out view on the value of free markets and voluntary exchange for modern economies. With today's shift toward bigger government and ever further redistribution, Friedman's ideas are more important than ever. Economic decisions made by a society of individuals is what allowed the US become an economic powerhouse, not a government induced separation of work and reward. Bernie Sanders would NOT approve this message.

A man who knew all the arguments for real capitalism. Kind, persuasive approach attracts interested listeners, deep understanding of benefits of real free markets. Highly recommended for millennials who lean toward socialist theory, wrongly assuming that socialism means "sharing".

Nearly two decades before Free to Choose hit the air (and bookstores), Milton Friedman laid out his "classical liberal" ideology in practical terms, addressing concrete policy issues. Obviously some of the topics addressed are no longer relevant today - the gold standard was dropped nine years after the book's publication - but Capitalism and Freedom remains a standard for libertarian political philosophy. Policy suggestions - even dated ones - serve to illuminate and clarify Friedman's ideology, one which equated economic and political freedom; without the former, the latter is an illusion.
