The book explores the relative size concept in German and in English: Basically: Humans are huge relative to a small spider, and small relative to a house (not actual examples). While an interesting idea, the German words are not really used in everyday German. English words seem a bit more applicable. Also, the way it is expressed, it seems really hard to follow for a very young child (3). I can imagine ten other ways of playing with the concept of relative sizes that would be more approachable for a young child - otherwise the book is just pictures.

I went through this excellent guidebook, step by step, during a full year of spiritual formation in preparing to become a Benedictine oblate. Vest has a pastoral, compassionate heart in leading others. This book presents "The Rule of St. Benedict", including the English text, Vest's commentary on that passage, her personal reflections as a spiritual guide for others, and a place for your own personal response and prayer. It was in this section where this book came alive, as I wrestled with the implications of that chapter for my life and the life of those within my circle of community. Vest writes for spiritual pilgrims, sojourners, for all those who understand the spiritual life as a journey. I've given this book to others who were seeking ancient wisdom for their daily life of faith, hope and love for God. This is a good book for all Benedictine monastics to read, as well as those who wish to apply the principles of the Rule of St. Benedict to their daily lives, and their life of prayer. My only criticism is the authors penchant for frequently interjecting her social opinions to the text. Nevertheless, it does provide valuable additional insights to the Benedictine Way.

Great Study guide for the Oblate Community! Norvene Vest did a great job in helping us to continue on the path of the Rule of St. Benedict. This is a great reference book for us as well.

At least I think it is, from what little I read. Since less than 4 stars didn't do it justice, "I like it" (what 4 stars means) seemed appropriate. My problem was with the supplier of the book, who didn't send the additional workbook (for which I paid), and I spent a week trying to straighten out the mess with people who evidently don't have English as a first language. From what I've read about the book, it is quite good. It just wasn't what I needed without the workbook.

If you are interested in breaking the rule of St Benedict into bite-sized pieces for in-depth study, this is an excellent book. The reflections written by the author are very helpful in relating the rule to daily life.

The reader must be interested in a) The Benedictine Rule and b) interpreting and applying The Rule in a contemporary and non-monastic setting for this to be useful. But, given those criteria, it will be useful to readers who have been serious about their faith journey for some time. There is a workbook by the same author that I found to be slightly more helpful.

It's a descent summary, well written and supported, but has a noticeable skew in portraying Buddhism, especially Mahayana, in an overly positive light. The text fares well by not skimming over some of the more difficult topics of Buddhism (schisms, nihilism, Zen aggression, role of women), but in these discussions Damien shifts the light to the theory of Buddhism as to discount the wrongs of Buddhism to being the wrongs of the implementation, rather than the teaching. In addition, certain not discussed topics include exclusivity (enlightenment is accessible to only these who follow the Buddhist path), and the practical life of a lay Buddhist with a stream of offerings to a pantheon of devas, bodhisattvas and buddhas.

With such a large amount of information to cover, Keown makes the most of this short book and covers history, divisions, and teachings. I would certainly recommend it for those wanting to understand a bit about Buddhism. It does get a bit dry at times because there is simply so much to cover in such a small amount of space. With that said, I would call it a time saver for those needing to understand a nice chunk of Buddhism quickly.

There are many introductory texts available on Buddhism, but this is by far the best I have come across. Its great strength is its scope. Other books that I have read on the subject present some or other particular variety of Buddhism, usually a Westernized version of Zen. As Keown states on page 1, "Students of Buddhism have tended to fasten onto a small part of the tradition and assume their conclusions held true about the whole". He illustrates this with the story of the blind men and the elephant (from a Buddhist scripture called the Udana) in which each man grasps a part of the elephant - tail, trunk, tusk, etc - and bases his description of the animal on that part alone. Keown attempts a broad overview of the history, development and fragmentation of Buddhist thought, from the life of the Buddha to the present day.It is what it says - only a very short introduction - but it is packed with useful information. Keown writes well, in a lucid, concise style.A different edition of the same book is also available in the A Brief Insight series, available here on Amazon. The text in that series is (so far as I can tell) always the same as in the VSI series, but the print is larger and there are many more illustrations, some in color. You might want to check that out if you intend to read this book, which you should.[PeterReeve]

Part of a series by Oxford University Press, this book, 'Buddhism: A Very Short Introduction', follows the same format as other texts in the Very Short Introduction series -- it has fewer than 150 pages, is well indexed, has a useful glossary, accessible and enjoyable narrative, and captures the essence in a very short space the major points of its topic. There are probably nearing 100 volumes in this Very Short Introduction series (making it, ironically, not a Very Short series), but among those that I have read, this text stands out as being one of the best.Damien Keown, of the University of London and the Royal Asiatic Society, addresses Buddhism past and present, East and West. Beginning with narrative tales the help to exhibit the principles, Keown examines in turn the major questions. First, with regard to Buddhism, is this -- is Buddhism really a religion? Often categorised as such, it is often the exception proving the rule. From these beginnings, Buddhism branches out, the largest grouping being the Mahayana (who get their own chapter), and other spreading first across Asia and then to the rest of the world.Like other books in this Very Short series, there are useful maps, a nice snapshot timeline, and suggestions for further reading, should the Very Short introduction not prove sufficient (and for many, this sample will leave the reader wanting more). I cannot speak too highly of this series, and of this volume on Buddhism by Keown in particular.

The introduction is short but it is very comprehensive. I enjoyed in particular the exposition on Manayama Buddhism and the clear presentation of the concept of Boddhisattva. I would have liked to have more deep analysis of the concept of no self and of dependent origination but the space is very short. A good introduction.

Gives a short introduction about the basics of Buddhism, the history within Asia, and its interaction and history with European culture and American culture. Has chapters on Buddha, Karma, rebirth, ethics, meditation, art, a short timeline and, as many books in the series have, a list of books for further reading. A great way to start learning about Buddhism if you don't know anything about or just a way to extend your knowledge of it. Small, cheap, and enjoyable to read which makes it a great gift for friends or family who may wish to learn about it without getting into a heavy 500 page tome. Get it used or new!

Found this little volume to be exactly what I hoped it would be. The author presented the information in an interesting, informative and objective manner. specifically comparing the various forms of Buddhism to one another as well as similarities and differences between Buddhism, and other Judeo-Christian religions. If one is looking for a brief introduction, this seems to be right on lline.

An easy book for college-educated laypersons. Seems to provide a survey of adequate breadth and a concrete foundation of concepts and terminology. Not completely objective, as one catches a glimpse of the author’s enthusiasm at times. I recommend it.
