The biggest problem with this book is its lack of context and references. There is only one standard work, The Reliance of the Traveller, written in the 13th century and based on all available sources for sharia. It is not available in e-book and there is only one accepted English translation. I was hoping that this book--inexpensive and downloadable--would help fill the gap until I get back to the US and can get a hard copy of Reliance.No such luck. This book has some organization by topics but almost no references--a few to the Quran, nothing relating to Hadith or the biographies of Mohammed by Ibn Ishaq, etc., nor any reference to the historical sources of Islamic jurisprudence. Also, nothing about the author--what is his qualification to write such a book?So I give it 2 of 5 stars: it contains a lot of statements which align with what I already know, and it does organize the material by topics. But it is hard to draw any conclusions because it lacks any sources. It's not worth getting if you really want to know about sharia. Makes a difficult subject easy to understand. Now I can seperate BS from fact in the news.
This manual covers literally everything you might need to know about being a Muslim. From every prayer to Haji, it's all covered here and in depth. Many of the Hadiths are also included, as well as words from scholars on issues of debate.
Basic book is well written. Problem is trying to find a specific source reference within the text. What is required is a concordance that allows you to look up a question (say, murder) and retrieve a list of appropriate references.
This book is well written but is hard to understand because of the religious connection and direction of the presentation which which is fractured and lack of reference connections.
Not very complete. I suspect this is a selective translation.
Time to learn what this is about. Read this
This is a good way to begin to understand the complexities and depth of Sharia Law.
