About the Author
Philip E. DeVol has been training and consulting on poverty issues since 1997 and on Bridges Out of Poverty since the very beginning of this initiative when he co-authored Bridges Out of Poverty: Strategies for Professionals and Communities with Ruby K. Payne, Ph.D., and Terie Dreussi Smith in 1999. In 2004, he wrote Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin -By World: Building Your Resources for a Better Life to help people in poverty investigate the impact of poverty on their communities and themselves. He wrote the revised edition of Getting Ahead which was released in September 2012. DeVol works in North America and internationally with communities that apply Bridges constructs including sites in Canada, Australia, Uganda, and Slovakia where Bridges Communities have been awarded two European Union grants to further the work there. Bridges Communities bring people together from all classes, sectors, and political persuasions to address the multiple causes of poverty in a systemic way. The many Bridges Communities using Getting Ahead led to a new edition of Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin -By World. DeVol consults with Bridges Communities on a variety of topics to assist knowledge transfer among the many individuals, organizations, and communities that are adopting Bridges principles in their settings as well as developing new levels of expertise. In addition to writing and consulting, DeVol works with aha! Process s collaborations with other organizations to implement innovative, high-impact strategies for ending poverty and building sustainable communities where everyone can do well. His 2010 book Investigations into Economic Class in America, co-authored with Karla M. Krodel, applies the Getting Ahead concepts to college life for under-resourced postsecondary students. Finally, a collection of DeVol s essays and articles was published by aha! It describes how communities, organizations, and businesses across the U.S. have applied Bridges concepts. In his current work DeVol builds on his 19 years as director of an Ohio outpatient substance abuse treatment facility in which he designed treatment programs and collaborative systems for school-based prevention, community-based intervention, and Ohio s first alternative school for recovering young people. During this time he also co-authored The Complete Guide to Elementary Student Assistance Programs with Linda Christensen. He and his wife, Susan, live in the country near Marengo, Ohio, just a few miles from his two children and their three grandchildren.

We read this book as we began a welfare initiative in our area to mentor people who were living in poverty. The book does an excellent job of helping you understand the culture of poverty. Even more so, the book teaches us the value of each individual's experience in life. It is not about good vs bad lifestyles. It is about the value of all of our lifestyles and what we can learn from each other. A must read for anyone who will be working in any way with those who live in poverty. For me personally, I had to face my own judgmental attitudes and make some deep internal changes.
This book should be read by teachers, government and medical workers. It is by far one of the best reads about humanity and community I have ever read. I look at poverty and life in general totally different now after reading this book. Wished I had read it years ago. I highly recommend it. In fact I think all church workers should read it as well. Everyone should read it. A life altering book.
This book provides many real insights into why people in generational poverty often have difficulty in their efforts to transition into middle class life and the world of careers, home ownership, and so on. Making this transition is far more than simply finding a job; it requires the learning of the ways of a new culture. This book looks at the harsh realities that tend to keep people in poverty. The good news is that it is possible to make the transition. Mentors and coaches can help people move on to a much better life.
For those who want to understand how to work with people of poverty this is a must read book. Few people understand the depth of social problems that the people of poverty experience. It's not as simple as we might think to just give things to people and expect them to respond. Great techniques and methodology in this book
The front section of this book has a ton of great insights into working with people in poverty. As a person who has some experience with generational poverty, much of what is here rings true to me; however, some of the organizational strategies work more for administration level and would be hard to implement from the bottom up. If you service impoverished communities, you should read this book. If you run an organization that services these communities, you should buy this book and learn from it.
A good informative read. It documents what one may know intuitively, but puts the information into concise, easy to remember lists and categories. A practical discussion with limited forays inro political issues.

I'm torn. This may help you talk with potential champions and allies, but it really doesn't take into account the experience, interests, strengths or needs of the people it purports to help.
