I just bought and read this book on my Kindle. History is written by the winners, and this book is a preview of how Trump will be viewed in history if he is a successful president. I have long been a fan of this authors writing, and I was not disappointed.I was more interested in what I would learn. As a news hound, I feel reasonably well read on the subject. I was pleasantly surprised that he expressed the opinion that I already had that the 2 (or 3?) prior presidents had laid the groundwork for a Trump, with their own failed presidencies, smugness and interbreeding. But his unfamiliar assertion was that Trump had been serious about becoming President for decades, and that his last decade or two was spent preparing for this journey. I had assumed that Trump was a publicity hound, and his campaign was not necessarily meant to win. In Blacks telling, he cultivated fame with working class, middle American enterprises (Reality TV, Pro wrestling, Beauty contests). And immersed himself in their ideas.I also learned that Trump was a more honest businessman than I believed (The author did a large business deal with him), and was surprised how long held many of his policy inclinations are.Highly recommend this book
One tiny fault. The last 10 or so pages could have been a prologue or epilogue because they brilliantly sum up President Trump’s successes and eccentricities. Read them first.As a mature adult with extensive international experience I learned quickly that results are the measure. Eccentricity is not a curse.Perhaps we don’t learn that until we are in our late twenties and that might explain the disdain for him at universities. But I pity those over that age who should read this excellent work to balance their views of unfounded hypocritical cynicism.Don’t worry, the author cites what some might call the ‘bad stuff’ but he puts it in context.I would rather have a strong, intuitive president with quirks rather than a phoney who is a weathervane not a leader.
Black gives a reasoned and clear summary of Trump's life and record thus far. Quick, accurate, and insightful, Black offer criticism where he thinks it justified, but balances the good and the bad judiciously to explain how America and the world came to such a state and how Donald Trump could present himself as the man for the hour.
Black is such a master of the English language that having a dictionary handy is recommended. His wit and talent for a descriptive " skewer " is well worth the price of this book. I mean how much better can a description of Hollywood depicted as " a moral and intellectual pigsty, an asylum for the stupid, the corrupt and the vocally shallow " be better phrased? The definitive story of Trump's incredible victory and the "Jobian " burden he is courageously overcoming in his bid for greatness.
A fascinating and well-written look at a fascinating - and very sharp, shrewd, and intelligent - man. It confirmed my guess that Trump is stupid like a fox, and keeps his enemies off-balance to maintain his upper hand. I once mentioned this to a friend I've known since childhood, and was told (emphatically) "No, he's too stupid to do anything like that." Anti-Trumpers STILL don't understand what he's doing, and how he gets it over on them every time. And THAT is Donald Trump's genius - making people wildly underestimate him, and then taking them to the cleaners. Brilliant!Thanks to Conrad Black for writing a concise, intelligent and frequently extremely amusing book. I enjoyed every minute of it, and only gave it 4 stars because I wish it were longer!
This is a welcome relief from all the knee-jerk Trump-hating books out there, or the ultra-laudatory Fox News chorus on the right. Black is critical when Trump deserves it, but laudatory in the many more cases where Trump has made progress as President and the press refuses to offer fair analysis or grudging praise. From that viewpoint, the book could well be subtitled, "A press reaction like none other." As I said on election night, "This ought to be entertaining," and it certainly has been. Black is a detailed chronicler of two other misunderstood presidents -- Nixon, excoriated by the left, and FDR, often hated by the right. He exhaustively set the record straight on both, in a fair-minded non-partisan way. This book is far slimmer than those two masterworks, hence my 4-stars instead of five: I wish Black had waited a while to write a more full first-term analysis, or at least given us an indication that this would be his intention -- Part 1 of a two-part work.
I chose the after reading a review. I thought it was a very good book. That showed both good and bad aspects of the presidents personality and actions. So many things about Trump are taken so wildly out of context I feel this book goes along way towards rectifying that. One thing though as a reader you want to have a dictionary to hand as the author is more than fond of his vocabulary and shows it off. There are many interesting anecdotes having to do with many of the media personalities involved in attacking the president. Over all a very enjoyable read. It probably won't change anyone's mind.
Full disclosure, Conrad Black and Mark Steyn are two of my favorite wordsmiths. I'm only 1/3 through this book since receiving it earlier today, but so far it is an excellent read and well worth the price. It's not hagiography by any measure.
