Very sold (3.5 stars) story about Lando in the post Episode III, pre-Episode IV, Star Wars universe. The story moves along well and the dialogue is great (make sure you imagine Billy Dee Williams voice whenever you read his lines). We get the much-demanded origin of Lobot as an extra bonus.Maleev's artwork is sensational.
Lando Calrissian is heavily indebted to Papa Toren. He needs a major score in order to settle things. And Papa Toren has found just the right opportunity -- an expensive pleasure ship owned by a rich imperial that would more than make up for the amount Lando owes. The ship is in a lightly guarded shipyard getting a refit. As an added plus, the ship is reportedly filled with treasure that Lando can keep should he succeed. All Lando has to do is steal the ship and get it back to Toren. Lando begins assembling a team to pull off the heist. In a scene that reminds one of Danny Ocean, Lando organizes his crew and lays out the plan for taking the ship. Included in his team are his faithful companion Lobot; Korin, an antiquities expert; and twin warriors Aleksin and Pavol. Lando's perfect plan falls predictably apart and he and his team are left to deal with Imperial guards, one of the galaxy's top bounty hunters, and the ancient Sith secrets stored within the ship they learn belongs to none other than Emperor Palpatine himself. The artwork in this book, by Alex Maleev, is fantastic. It's not the realistic style that most of the other Marvel Star Wars books have, but it's very well-done, and most importantly, it fits the book very well. Perhaps just as impressive as the line art is the coloring work of Paul Mounts, who does a great job of accentuating the pictures. The writing and storyline are perfect. The dialog is entertaining. Charles Soule advances the storyline and mixes in several subplots. He also does an excellent job of switching from scene to scene and knowing what to leave out and what to include to keep the storyline moving along. The characters are interesting and developed. Overall, this book is a great read and rivals the Han Solo series for the best Star Wars book that Marvel has produced.
I loved this story! I've read most of (still have Chewbacca, Vader Down, and Vader vol 2) the comics for the new Star Wars canon. Until now, Vader was my favorite, Lando has now surpassed Vader. The story is exciting, with a bit of danger and mystery. I wish we had more information on some of the objects that Lando found on the ship, but I appreciate that they leave that mystery open. I went into this book not expecting much, and it came out as #1 in my collection so far! Great writing, great art, they even have the ignition sound of lightsabers in this book, which is something that, for some reason, the other comics ignore. Excellent all around!
I was really surprised by this comic because so far the marvel-starwars canon universe hasn't been that special. Most stories lack depth and don't take risks as far as where a character can go which is not their fault since they can't contradict the movies. Starwars: Lando however brought interesting characters and gave the Lobot & Lando relationship alot of layers. I really felt that this was a true friendship and that alone was enough for me to love this comic. It stays very true to lando's character in the movies and brings a deeper meaning to when they interact in episode 5. As far negatives go, it's some minor things that happen to certain characters that felt too convenient in terms of storytelling. I'm not gonna go into spoilers because I do feel that if you love Lando in Empire and Return of the Jedi then it's a must read.
Out of the new era of Marvel Star Wars series, the Lando series has been my favorite. Very faithful to the characters, great attention to "Star Wars detail," and a fun backstory related to two ancillary characters - Lando and Lobot. This could have been called "Lobot," as it tells a lot of his backstory, but it's a Lando story through-and-through. I can't recommend this enough. Really worth picking up.I do wish Amazon would ship these in cardboard, rather than a padded mailer - they never arrive in great shape...if that matters to you, you have been warned.
GREAT BOOK! This has got to be the best portrayal of Lando since we first met him in The Empire Strikes Back. And, we learn some stuff about Lobot, too! He was quite different--different from how we see him in Episode V. What happens to him? You'll learn about that in this story, and you'll learn about his friendship with Calrissian.Good stuff!I want to see more of Lando!
Interesting story, twists at every corner and friends that last forever. A typical Star Wars story. Lando before he was a good guy for the Rebellion was a spectacular choice to go with. I didn't get as connected with the characters as I have in the past but still a good strong story.
Very enjoyableLando story add a nice back story. Good characterization and I always enjoy madeev art. Soules writing is top notch as always
It's no Vader, by far the best of Marvels SW line, but it's an interesting read. Landon has potential to be a great character, I don't feel he is there yet but definitely on the way
